In the salt air tropical environment steel is less than ideal due to rusting. Plus it's expensive due the the long transportation distances to get it there. They have to drive steel pilings into the earth to support a multi story building no matter where it's built, especially on a sandy peninsula with a very high water table but that's about it for steel other than re-bar in the concrete. That being said steel reinforced concrete is the preferred type of construction. It is not affected by the salt air, it stands up to hurricanes very well and the materials are readily available. If you haven't noticed, everything including the interior walls, were made of poured in place concrete in all of the old buildings. That is not by accident.

    This is a good point.

The salt in the air rusts everything steel, even where we are 5 miles from the Ocean.

Also Cancun is built on limestone, so there are plenty of cement works locally. No idea where the nearest steel mill is, there is no iron here, probably a thousand miles away.

We are just about to embark on building the first of 3 houses here, so I'm kind of learning a little about how it works. I have learned that speed of construction is directly proportional to how fast money is put in to it.

Opposite the place we used to live, a house was started two years ago and is still not finished. Our first build, similar to that one, should be finished within four months once we get going.

I am sure Temptation have plenty of money to throw at it. Every day they are closed is many thousands of revenue lost.

Wow, the new Sexy pool looks great! It looks like it just about covers the area where the old sports pool was too, which is something a lot of people said they should connect anyway. Looking good! so exciting
