Uber wins every time with us. We use them for work and personally at lest once a week in South Florida. We have never had issues and have only poorly rated one driver due to rudeness but we still got where we where going safely. Cars are always clean and for the most part well maintained. They also have great Insurance that is covered though Uber and pays more then most taxis here do.

Same problems still ongoing. Drivers suspected of being uber drivers (some are, some arent) have been beaten up and had their cars smashed.

Result is Uber drivers are scared to work and passengers scared too, which means there are few cars on the road and therefore higher (surge) pricing is in effect making it easier and cheaper to use regular taxis.

Hopefully a balance is found and Uber gains a foothold.

Steve, my most outrageous memory of taxi drivers in Cancun was when you were with me in the ambulance last October, with lights and sirens, and the fucking taxis drivers were honking and trying to pass the ambulance. What a bunch of loonies! I vote for Uber.

Yep! I remember. A few are ok, but the majority are complete idiots out to rip people off as fast as they can, for as much as they can.

    My favourite taxi story:

So, about 8 years ago I go out with some friends from TTR to Coco Bongo. We have a good night and jump in a taxi back and I ask "How much to TTR, and then on to <address> downtown?" in my best Spanish. (Always agree a price at the start of the trip)

The driver answers in English and says one hundred, then pauses for a few seconds and says, and fifty. So I'm thinking 100 to the hotel, and then a further 50 from TTR to my place from there. I know the prices and it sounded about right to me.

We get to the hotel, and my friends get out and say "Don't worry Steve we got this" and pay the driver. I say thanks and then we drive on to my place. We arrive at my place and I am not sure whether my friends covered the whole 150 or just the 100. So I ask the driver how much I owe him and he tells me 150.

I tell him, I know that's not right. It's either nothing or its 50. He says no it's 150. I say I'm not paying it, my friends already paid something. We get into it for a while and then he aggressively says, OK I'm taking you back to Coco Bongo and speeds off.

I know that he might take me to Coco Bongo, or he might drop me in the Jungle. Both of which weren't a good option at 3am in the morning. He slows down to make the return back from our street and has to wait for a car to pass. The door is unlocked, the car is doing about 3mph, so I casually unbuckle my seatbelt, open the door and get out. I start walking the 100 yds back to where he should have left me. He stops the car and chases after me. I'm trying to reason with him, and suddenly he hits me across the forehead with a wooden club he was hiding behind his back. By this time I'm pretty close to home.

Immediately my eyes are filled with blood, I cant see and I'm disorientated. I start shouting for security who looked after the residential we lived at the time. They come out with batons drawn, tell the driver they are calling the Police, the taxi driver leaves and they help me back to my house.

Next afternoon the security tell me the same numbered taxi has been waiting across the street for a couple of hours, just waiting and observing where I lived.

Maybe I should tell my other taxi stories - there are a few over the years :)

Long story short, Uber will be a most welcome addition here and the sooner the better.

We use Uber all the time now, can't stand being in a unsafe vehicle called a licensed taxi with no breaks, wobbling wheels and drivers who just moved to Canada
