So, today there was a protest by 2000 taxi drivers (total number of taxis in Cancun is 32,000) who blocked traffic in the Hotel Zone. Also an Uber driver had his car rammed off the road and overturned. Outgoing Governor of the State supports the taxis (lots of bribes recieved), but he leaves office on 25 Sept, and the new Governor supports Uber. Legal arguments about whether Uber is really a taxi or a private chauffeur service. One is permissible, the other not. Overwhelming support for Uber from locals both expats and Nationals who are tired of the sloppy service, rip off prices, poor standard of vehicles and that 60% of taxi drivers are involved in the drugs trade. Of 300+ reviews on Facebook Cancun taxis get a score of 1.2 out of 5. Who wants to travel in the back of a taxi that looks like this:
We've used Uber close to 80x now and have had nothing but great experiences. So glad to have an alternative to being gouged from an extortionist taxi Union. Of course they don't like it , they can't steal your money anymore. Competition is good for the consumer and taxis will adapt or die. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
We are regular Uber riders when traveling in the US. Paying reduced fares, and not having to mess with cash is awesome. Seeing your car while it is on its way is much better than waiting on a taxi. I see no way that Uber drivers have any hope of making enough to pay any more than to cover their car expenses.
HI Bart... My brother is an Uber driver in the Bethalto / Edwardsville area and seems to think he's making a nice living doing it (he's still looking for a full time management position after being laid off). He makes at least 2 trips to STL on nights there's a Cards game. Those do add up. Jeff
We use Uber all the time to get around on "Going Out" nights here in Houston. Allows everyone to have a good time, and drink if they want to. But... I'll hold off using it in Cancun, or anywhere in Mexico, until all the uproar has dwindled.
