After many years of resistance from the Taxi Union Uber finally started operations in Cancun from 14 September. In the first day, 30 Uber drivers have had cars impounded and taxi drivers have blockaded known Uber cars and intend a demonstration blocking off the main Playa del Carmen to Cancun highway tomorrow (15th). Personally (like many locals) I think Uber is a welcome addition.. Existing taxi drivers are not happy as they see Uber as taking over their jobs. However, with Uber, standards of cars and service will improve, prices are much cheaper, and fewer rip offs and scams that the current taxi drivers are notorious for. However, you might want to avoid using the service until the current discontent has died down a bit. It might be a little risky at the moment.
I am always amazing by the existence of Uber in general. With organized crime being what it is in all countries, and the definite connection with the taxi industry, I'm surprised more people didn't end up with a horse head in their bed.
Steve, do you know if they will be allowed to pick up at the airport ? If so that would end up affecting and PO' ing all the transfer companies as well....
I understand not. A special license is needed that regular taxis don't even have. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
I put Uber in the same category as Delta airlines, I would only use them as a last resort. T Sent Using Tapatalk
