We will be visiting for our fist time soon and wanted some advice. About how much cash to bring in general for tipping. Also, how much to convert to pesos. For example, when it comes to tipping USA Transfers or any of the workers at TTR, are pesos preferred?

    Thx

They always take US currency too. I plan on tipping bartenders 10-20$ each day. $5 a day for housekeeper.

We plan on about $50 USD a day for tips...excursions are extra in our planning.

Some other TTR tips: bring travel size Lysol spray for the AC in your room, small power bar if you need to charge multiple devices or bring a kettle etc, bring enough sunscreen for the entire trip (very $ at the resort or nearby), hats (preferably with a decent size brim), pack your bathing suits in your carry-on and my personal fav...a couple of rolls of Charmin, lol.

For the "RSvP" sitdowns, what is the consenses amount for a tip? There is no dollar value, so we are a bit confused.

Also do you order what you like at the sitdown? Or a preset menu? Thanks!!

The sit down restaurants all have pre-set menus but it's not much different than ordering in the states. You'll be able to find something you like. It has appetizers, soups, salads, entrees, desserts, etc. There are add-on entrees you can pay an upcharge for but they will be clearly marked as costing a few bucks.

As for tipping, we just leave $5-$10 behind, depends what we have in our pockets at that time. If we forget to grab cash on the way out, or all we have are larger bills, we chalk it up to "its all inclusive, tipping isn't required, its just a nice thing to do" and move on (we don't intentionally stiff them, but after drinking all day, its happened before). Buffet or Margaritas for lunch is usually only $2-$4 from us since its a simple, quick meal.

The menus aren't pre-set. They are just regular menus (many options in all different categories to choose from), and you order whatever you would like. In all the restaurants(aside from the buffet) there are also a few additional "members only" options (but anyone could order them for a change). 2 trips, when I went not as a member, I never thought I was missing out because there were still plenty of good things to choose from.

As far as tipping, I think that really depends on the complexity of your order. If you go and order a salad and an entree and leave, that's much less work and table time for the waiter then if you were to go and order apps, soup, salad, entree, and desert. So I feel tipping is according to your meal.

We have gone with a larger group, and probably drove our server crazy with a 2+ hour meal drinking, eating, and having fun. Obviously every couple threw down at least 10 bucks each, and the server probably walked with 50-70 bucks from our table. But there have been times I have just went with Elyse and ordered 3-4 apps to share, and we ate and left pretty quickly. So that would be less of a tip. (and as far as ordering what you want, my one friend ordered 3 dinners one time at the seafood just for him, haha. they didn't mind at all)

Also, tips are completely optional. So don't think you will get bad service if you don't tip at the bar or a restaurant. They still will treat you great. They just might treat tippers just a little better ;) (which is essentially commonsense in any service industry)
