Hi everybody. We were just wondering if anybody could share their opinions regarding the best medical insurance coverage providers for Canadians traveling to Mexico... with a lean towards which companies might offer a better chance for direct payment (insurance provider paying the hospital directly) should something happen. We get medical insurance coverage every time we go, but we've read/heard stories of people having to put 20,000-30,000 dollars down on their credit cards in hopes of getting reimbursed upon return home... and that worries us because we have also heard stories of companies trying to weasel there way out of paying. We are more than willing to pay a premium rate for premium coverage, but are unaware of any such providers. Any help that you wonderful people can provide would be very much appreciated! Thanks a bunch!

The past two visits I shopped around for a good price and opted for Manulife which is about $28 for a week. I compared coverage and all the companies are pretty much the same give or take. Last september I fell getting into the sports pool one night. I ended up spraining my wrist. I called them up, explained what happened, made a report with the hotel, went to see the free doctor across the street and everyone agreed I should go have x-rays just to be sure. The hotel called the hospital, they were waiting for me when I got there. The insurance had already sent the paperwork and I just had to fill out some info. The entire experience was quick and painless (except for the wrist). Never had to pay one cent except cabs back and forth and a prescription that was 150 pesos. When I got home they sent me some papers to fill out and that's it. I would highly recommend them!

We have purchased medical evacuation insurance through AAA before but never had to use it... so I am watching this thread because WE WILL buy some sort of insurance again.

this will be our second time using Travel Insured out of Boston. Really good rating and reviews, covers medical (pay then, not reimbursement), cancellation insurance, medical or weather evacuation, etc.....$144 for both of us for 10 days. Thought it was reasonable for the piece of mind it offers.

In the past and we will be purchasing short term health insurance with GEOBLUE They advertise that they are in cooperation with Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield and have contracts in place to direct bill if medically necessary. While I have never needed to use them (knock on wood) from my research I feel pretty comfortable with them and the price which is $500,000K coverage with $100 Deductible for the two of us aged mid 50's for 12 days was $94.08 according to GEO's customer service they have a direct bill contract in place with the Best Hospital in Cancun (Hospital Galenia) Recommended by Steve as THE place to go if needed. Hopefully none of us will need it but here you go...

Thanks to my experience last October I can tell you that Galenia is a great hospital and they are contracted with Cigna, our regular insurance, and they paid directly. That was a relief to not have to pay anything to leave.

Did you buy a special Intnl add on or they linked back to Cigna without you doing anything?

We had travel insurance but Cigna was primary and we didn't add any coverage. No co-pay either.
