We swap them out down by the border crossing to Mexico as it's super competitive there and get pretty much the best exchange rate you ever could. Trying to order from the bank ahead of time will work, but generally the exchange rate really kinda sucks. The times we did that the rate was way better at the front desk of TTR.
You would think that since they price TTR in US dollars and since the exchange rate has changed 22% from a year ago that the rates would have dropped 22%. Wouldn't that make sense?
For the Brits and Canadians exchange straight to Peso's, better for us and the locals. You Americans are fine with your US $'s that are over valued right now
From your experience what would be an ideal amount of Pesos to have mainly for tipping. I am there for five days
Totally depends on your own preference. Everybody is different. It's not expected but the staff are awesome and work hard.
There are several apps that are available for free. Just search "Currency Converter" at the app store.
I live on the US border with mexico and the exchange rate we are getting is about 17.75 pesos to a dollar or some places it is 18 pesos to the dollar. USD and exchange before you go is the way to do it
I was at my bank today and they quoted a price of 16.8 pesos per us dollar. If I order a minimum of 300 us dollars worth it is no charge.
