Don't be nervous. Expedia is an extremely reputable company which sends travelers on thousands of successful trips every day. This was an unfortunate story but percentage wise quite rare or they'd be out of business.
We've booked with Expedia several times and not had a problem. We always get an airline booking code with our confirmation. We then use it to pre-select our seats on the airline's website. Gets us the seats we want and confirms the booking at the same time.
Not like we have a lot of options in the great white north either. The BEST service I got was from Sell Off vacations,,, after a nasty virus went through the resort we were staying at , after a few phone calls we were surprised with a free 2 week stay at any 5* riu resort, and they picked up the airfare and taxes. (7,500) A good company is measured on what they do when things go wrong,, this could be a new thread ?
Expedia is actually awesome. Til you have to change something. Had a similar situation last Feb. Had a snow storm coming to the NE the night we before our TTR trip. NO FUCKIN WAY were we getting stuck here and missing Cancun and our friends. Called US Air and becuase we booked thru Expedia they couldnt help us (completely understandable) Took about 4 hours for me to get the moron on the phone to just cancel my flight, change it to 3 days BEFORE original flight (knowing I had to pay the 200.00 per ticket change fee) and rebook me...lesson learned. Booking the flight thru the airline and changing things are easy. This is what they do for a living. They are professionals. Booking thru Expedia, CheapoAir etc...they sell packages. They know nothing about how the airline works. This is the chance you take when saving money on a package. ALSO, Expedia sells A LOT of REFUNDABLE airline seats. Pay attention to that as well...
I had booking codes actually 3 different ones each time they made changes and none worked. That's what alerted me to the problem. Even after talking to the airlines and them confirming that the booking codes didn't exist Expedia insisted I was wrong
Been looking at Expedia for package trips in June/July to Temptation from Memphis ,USA, great prices on the hotel part, but the flights offered are terrible. They offer one or two flights for the good package price but they are usually going thru two/three airports with very questionable transfer times and getting into Cancun late at night . Flights that can make the trip reasonable costs extra. starting at 100 to 300 usd, these are additional costs to travel package... really sucks...
I won't bore you with our problems with expedia during the great ice storm of Feb 2014, but let's just say that I've never used them again. Very expensive lesson learned, their customer "service" left a lot to be desired, Delta actually worked with us to change cities, expedia promised to refund our original tickets but never came thru. Never again.
