Hello, We are coming to TTR in Mid-Jan and this will be our 3rd trip. We have yet to venture off the resort and looking for suggestions of where to go or what to do? We have done the Booze Cruise and my legs are still wobbly for a few different reasons Should we see the ruins or take a snorkeling adventure... Thoughts and thank you
you could do the ruins at Tulum in the morning and then spend lunch and the afternoon at Xe Ha..We did that this last June. It was a nice day trip.
We don't really like being committed to a certain tour or route and tend to make decisions on the fly, so here's a few of our favorite excursions that you can just choose last minute: 1) Jet ski tour. We've done the Boobscruise and other boat cruises, but I get sea sick on larger boats, so renting a jet ski / getting a jet ski tour is my favorite way to explore the water. They offer a 2-3 hour Jungle Tour which is decent - they first take you out to the sandbars to snorkel and you'll see a ton of fish. They then guide you into the lagoon side of the Zone Hotelera area, and you buzz the entire shoreline so you can see all the different hotels, houses, properties and locals. We loved it so much, we paid extra and asked them to take us along the entire ocean side of the cancun strip, so we saw all the hotels, resorts and beaches from the ocean side, but since you're on a jet ski, you can get close enough to feel the vibe of each resort and wave to people. Total trip was about 4-5 hours and I think we ended up paying $250 US with tip. The best part was we weren't on the schedule and we could just tell our guide what we wanted to check out. Be sure to bring sunscreen with you in the jet ski - you will need to reapply often with the salt water constantly splashing up on you. 2) Bike/scooter tour. Rent a bike or scooter and ride the entire Blvd Kukulcan. You can stop at your leisure to see all the hotels (we like to check out the lobbies haha), strip malls, community parks, local restaurants, tourist strips, etc. I hopped on Google maps beforehand and just starred any stops we wanted to make along the way. You can go as far as you like and just turn around when you're ready, but if you do the entire ride down to The Westin/Club Med (map it) and back, with stops to shop and eat, it's a full daytime trip. If you start your ride before 11am, be sure to really lather up the SPF - you will burn in the morning sun! You can bring drinks/snacks with you, but there's enough convenience stores along the way where you can buy anything you need. 3) Isla Mujeres. Most cruises will make a quick shopping/lunch stop on the island, but we liked taking the ferry across and renting a golf cart to see the island. Lots of tourist shopping, foods, bars etc and some nice beaches. It was about $60 US with tip to rent the golf cart for about 4 hours. Next time we're considering staying one night over there to check out the night life. 4) Harry's Grill. OK, this isn't really an excursion, but if you appreciate a good steak, this restaurant is worth planning a small trip for haha. Have fun!
Really depends on what you are looking. Something quiet? Something rowdy? Something fun? Here is what we have done: Booze cruise: lots of fun, music, drinking, good times Boobs Cruise: same as above but topless and more erotic Trip to Cozumel with snorkeling: weak snorkeling, quiet and run down island, it was like being at a huge fela market Trip to Isla Mujeres: Ferry over to the island, rent a golf cart for the day and do your own thing, great fun! The island is a mix of old and new, there is a good vibe, lots of action Trip to ruins: very boring unless you are a history fanatic, to stand there in the sun and look at a ruined building listening to the guide describe what happened is not our cup of tea. Each ruin required a 15 minute - 45 minute explanation. Very, very long and boring Xcaret: Nice mix of snorkeling, entertainment, animals, food Coco Bongo: Pure party, I've been 5 times! Trip to Playa del Carmen: Good beach, shopping, eating, drinking, nice vibe Yibida yibida, That's all folks!!
If you're adventurous, one of the adventure parks may be a good option. I did Selvatica last trip and it was good (ziplines, ATV's and cnotes) and I hear Xplor is also good. I've done the parasailing thru the tour tent at the resort, and while not a day-trip was awesome. Also for a night out if you can peel yourself away from the TTR night life, I strongly recommend the new permanant Cirque show in Cancun...it's a bit spendy but worth every penny. Go for the whole dinner theater option. The others listed above are also good choices. Nate
We did the jungle boat tour(which you can book directly at the resort) where you take a 2 person jet boat through the mangroves and then snorkel for an hour. Total tour is about 3 hours and was a lot of fun. You get to see a lot of hotels and resorts. Just note that the tour includes people from other resorts.... The Mrs was wearing her TTR swim wear and during the snorkeling portion of the trip and garnered a lot of friends who were interested in looking at more than just the coral reefs! At one point a group of young men just decided to sit on their boats and watch her snorkel. Which she loved!
