Hello - can anyone give me their opinion on whether or not this is worth doing? It sounds cool, but I am not sure if it is worth being away from the resort 12 hours and being on a bus that long. Are the other closer ruins good? Any advice on where to buy from would be appreciated as well. We are first timers so I am trying to figure it out :)

It is a day and yeah its worth seeing .. but by the time you get back to the resort you are drained so it means your night is an early one too ... we found the trip to Tulum was worth the visit ... it was half day back around Lunch and the beach there and the water was one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen .... and throw my wife's awesome boobs in her tight shirt as you can see her pic in our profile even better lol

The last time we went to Mexico we used Edventure Tours. They are located just outside the gates of the Tulum Ruins. They had all kinds of tour options and pick people up from their resorts. They were amazing! They were a little bit more affordable and not commercialized. We did a package with Tulum (absolutely breathtaking!), ziplines, cenote swimming, and Akumal where we swam with the sea turtles. We also added on a picture CD. I know they have other packages as well. Not sure if they do Chichen Itza. I would say Tulum is about 90 minutes away from Cancun but not sure since we were closer to Playa when we went and it was about an hour from there.
How many days are you going to be in Mexico? You are gone from the resort all day and it is a long day. I personally don't like to do excursions unless we are there at least a week. I like my relaxing time and the excursion days are fun but not as relaxing. Although when we go in December we are staying less than a week and are planning on doing the Boobs Cruise because this trip is more about having fun and letting loose than relaxing! LOL!

It's interesting to see, but a long ride. Truth be told, it's really tough to pull yourself away from the fun at TTR. Maybe see how you feel about it after you're there a day or 2; you can always book it if you want a break from the TTR fun. But I suspect you won't want to leave the resort after seeing how fun it is.

We did it a few years ago and we booked it from USA Transfers. That is the only way I would do a trip from now on, we highly recommend using them.

Thanks everyone! We will be there 6 nights and only 5 days. Just not sure I want to take a whole day to go.. Plus it leaves at 7:30 am so that means an early night the night before too.. Sounds like it would cut into a lot of drinking time LOL!! Have to decide if it is worth it.

We went to Chichen Itza on one of our trips down there and yes it was a full day. We had watched the weather reports and booked for one of the days that were overcast. Figured if it was going to be overcast we wouldn't be missing a day in the sun by the pool. We booked at the hotel in one of the little booths by the quiet pool and I wished we'd asked around. Think with USA Transfers you can book to go directly to Chichen Itza. We had the touristy version, we stopped at one of the Cenote's enroute which was amazing to see, looked like a hole in the ground and you think what's so special about that until you enter via a stairway as what that little hole really is, is a beautiful cave. After that we went to an authentic Mayan village, not sure if it truly was as it was a bunch of shops, and then we got to Chichen Itza. Glad we went as I always wanted to see them. It was worth it to me, have to say if I could have gone directly there spent as much time as I could at the site I'd have enjoyed it more, but it was worth the day we spent together. And it was a long day at that, think we got back to the hotel a little after 7:30 hit the buffet restaurant for dinner, went and had a shower changed clothes and went to Paty O's for a couple of drinks.....like to say we were warriors and partied long into the night but we headed to bed about 11:30 and that was the second of 2 early nights for us.

I wanted to book an excursion for our trip to DRM last year, and wifey convinced me to wait until we got the the resort, and schedule it for the worst-weather day. On day 2, we completely forgot about the idea, and had a blast staying on site the whole time.

Again, this is our first trip to TTR, but I assume you will be able to book trips on site, if you choose. Booking in advance gets you a little discount, but then you're locked in. Don't forget that you'll be paying twice - your missed meals, booze, and entertainment at TTR, plus the actual cost of the excursion.

I'd suggest checking the resort to see if you can book when there. Then you have the option, after you see what the resort is like, and decide if you're willing to part with a day of fun.

If you decide to do something like Chichen Itza, try and find some other people to share the trip with and then hire someone like USA Transfers. that way you get a van to yourselves and can direct the pace of the trip.
I would not go on a bus and be at their mercy !!! unless of course you can round up enough fun friends and rent a bus and have it all to yourselves. :)
