During our visit next week, my wife and I would like to go out on a snorkeling expedition. This could possibly be changed to swimming with whale sharks as I have only heard positive comments about the whale sharks. I'm sure not all snorkeling locations or snorkeling companies are created equally. Any recommendation from people who have done this in the past?

We've been snorkeling many times near Cancun, one of my favorites that's nearby was the jungle tour with Cancun adventure. They snorkeling for us wasn't amazing I think it had recently stormed but you get to drive small boats through the mangrove and out into the ocean, it was nice to just be able to spend some time just the two of us in the boat, snorkel with the group and drive back enjoying each other's company. If you are up to go a little farther, we have snorkeled at Dos Ojos Cenote, you go through a series of caves, while there aren't tons of fish it was incrediblly beautiful and something I would absolutely recommend doing. Each cave offers crystal clear water and you can see pretty far down into underwater caves. It's really cool when groups of divers go by because there lights offer more spectacular views. We also bring our our snorkel gear and have driven to Akumal to snorkel with the sea turtles. Many companies will take you out as well if you do not have your own gear, but since we had our own gear we woke up super early and got out before all the tour groups started. It was amazing swimming with them and watching them munch on the sea grass, then surface nearby for air. Let me know if you have any questions!
Would highly recommend snorkeling with the whale sharks. did it a few years ago and it was outstanding. Going to do it again this year when we are there Sept 6 - 13
