Mercada 28 is a local market for tourist where you can buy souvenirs, talk to the locals, and eat real mexican food. Any bus will take you there, it's in the opposite walking direction from Walmart. Usually locals will show you the way.

Mercada 23 is a bit farther, smaller and not for tourists, only for local people, I do recommend visiting to see the local culture and try out what the locals eat.

We've been down to Playa Del Carmen, Cozumel, and Akumal many times. Akumal is very beautiful, (our favorite) and the other post is correct. You can swim easily with the turtles, no tour required. There are two competing dive shops there, and one is cool, one not so much. When you walk through the entrance arch steer to the RIGHT. You will find a good sized bar / restaurant, and the dive shop is just to the right of that in an octagon shaped building that is a dive shop only. We have rented the snorkel gear (mask, fins, snorkel and vest) $15 for the entire day there, and they have lockers as well. This is the place we have used, but it has been two years. Then simply wade into the water and swim out towards the reef. CAREFUL NEAR THE REEF! The currents can be strong washing both in and out over the reef. Waves go both ways! You do not want to touch the reef, (damage to reef and you) but you also do not want to be swept out to sea! I was out there once and when I finally looked up I was a LONG way past the reef and moving out quickly. Thankfully I am a strong swimmer and made it back, but it was a lesson about the currents sweeping back over reefs. As for swimming with the turtles, they are very gentle, and could care less about people in the water. They swim 100 times better than we do, and they generally just nibble the grass on the bottom. Don't touch them though. They are protected and the regulars of Akumal are a little sensitive about lots of visitors already. Their little slice of paradise has been discovered. The water at Akumal is very clear, not overly deep, and nice for snorkeling. As for the other dive shop to the left as you approach the beach, they will sometimes tell you that you must take their course, and join their group tour, but it's complete B.S. Just ignore it and act like you know where you are going. As for getting there, take the collectivo. It's a local transport option and about $3 each way. Most of the fleet has been replaced in the last couple years and is very modern. They will drop you off at the Akumal entrance path, and it's about an 1/8 mile walk on the sidewalk. No entrance fee required, and it's a great Mexico adventure. Then again, so is the Boobs Cruise and it's only 100' from the TTR beach. Since we've discovered that type of sea life we've kind of ignored the turtles. LOL

This all sounds AMAZING!!!! I am waiting to plan anything until I have the dates for the Boobs Cruise as that is a must for us. :flash:
