Well where do I start on July 10th my husband & I left from Los Angeles for our overnight flight to Cancun to stay in paradise TTR, we enjoyed our stay spent most our time at the party pool and the spa. Ate great food drank good drinks. We were scheduled to leave on Friday the 17th but on the 16th after my husband played an early game of volleyball on the beach he felt sick, he threw up blood by the beach, I told him go to the room and lay down maybe it's food allergy, he did why I got my stuff at the beach I wasn't more then 5 minutes behind him, upon arrival to our room #5131 I walked into a what I call a crime scene the hotel bathroom shower and closet area were covered in blood and some slimy stuff lots lots. I immediately called the front desk where they sent up security, a life guard and called a local doctor, the doctor arrived said to get this medicine stabilized my husband the cost for doctor $120 USD. So I thought we were in the clear I packed my bags while he rested got everything ready for our 9am flight. He woke up around 11pm again throwing up his insides spraying blood and guts all over me the bed everywhere (worst crime scene ever). I called for help yelling in the hallway to my friends that traveled with us they came running over now he was unconscious and having a seizure paramedics came the manager of hotel security ambulance, they carried my very ill husband down 3 fights of stairs got us in an ambulance and headed to the hospital upon arrival to Amerimed Hospital my husband was taken to the ER where they got him stabal they told me after one hour my bill for doing this was $3970.00 I told them I didn't have it. Upon arrival they took my credit card and charged me whatever they could on it which was $2300.00 now they told me my husband would have to be transferred somewhere else, I'm sitting going I don't even know where I am I'm covered in blood and guts and there asking me where would I like my husband to go, a nice male nurse came to me and told me they weren't treating me very nice and that I should call the red cross that they will take him somewhere he can get help and it would be free. So an ambulance came and took us to General Hospital which is a public Hospital, my husband was in ICU and given blood transfusions, antibiotics, etc. We were the only Americans in this hospital and were treated kindly at first. Know one could tell me what was happening with my husband ,let alone I could only see him for 2 minutes every 6 hours. Meanwhile my family worked the phone lines back in the USA calling the US Embassy, US Consulate, Red Cross all of these groups came to our aide and were very helpful, with the help of some great friends they paid for us to have an Medivac flight a special airplane equipped to handle critical care people at a price of $35,000 USD well when the hospital heard that we were going to evacuate him they didn't like that they removed my husbands ivs ,heart monitor, oxygen and pushed him to a hallway. So all in all my husband spent 3 days waiting for our airplane to arrive. I was told I had to pay $185.00 USD okay I said no problem, the Airvac guys came in grabbed my husband the hospital said oh he cant take that gown he cant take that sheet he can have that iv line in his arm. We were out of there in 2 minutes flat, rushed to a special ambulance then to the airport where the specially equipped leer jet was waiting our arrival. 4 1/2 hours later we arrive at UCLA Hospital in Los Angeles wow what a difference upon arrival 20 ER doctors were on him to figure out what was going on. The result A double tare in the ephosoghas, double lung pneumonia, heart attack, loss 80% of his blood. How we survived this I do not know, I do know someone was looking down on us and taking us in there hands. All in all I spent 9 days in blood and guts soaked clothes, while my husband was attended to. I came to Cancun to celebrate my 20 year wedding anniversary came with two pieces of luggage and two carry ons. I left with what clothes I had on and one carry on, my bags are still at TTR I'm working on trying to get them back hopefully Spirit Airlines will fly them back for me, and hopefully Best Day Shuttle will deliver them to the airport. What did I learn from this ALWAYS GET TRAVELERS INSURANCE ALWAYS MAKESURE YOU'RE CELL PHONE WORKS IN MEXICO ALWAYS HAVE THE US EMBASSY, US CONSULATE, RED CROSS TELEPHONES NUMBERS WHEN YOU TRAVEL OUTSIDE OF THE COUNTRY. Meanwhile my husband received excellent care at UCLA and after 9 days was released to come home, he is stable and received 7 units of blood so thank you to all you blood donors. He did also receive good care at General Hospital in Mexico it's just I think they didn't want us to remove him from there, but this was a critical situation and I needed to do what was best for him. Thank you all for your prayers. Thank God we made it, Thank God for those airline pilots & doctors on board that took care of him. And I hope TTR won't hold our luggage hostage anymore. Thanks for reading, Elizabeth & Tariq
Wow, that was intense. So glad it all worked out and the advice you have given will be remembered by this couple. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
Wow!! Thankfully he is Ok and healing. I ruptured my esophagus 19 yrs ago and can totally relate. Near death, rushed by ambulance to the hospital and spent 9 days. 7 transfusions... Recovery was slow. But we were at home in Canada. Your descriltion of crime scene brings back memories of our house during those 2 days of rapidly failing health and doctors' housecalls. couldn't imagine enduring it in a foreign county. Evrry9ne should heed your advice and experience. Again, glad he is OK.
I'm glad he is ok.....as a doctor myself, I'm just wondering how he got a double tear in his esophagus in the first place?
What a horror story! Glad to read that he's doing better. You always hope that you never have any problems on vacation abroad. Like you said, you better be prepared, just in case.
Doctors say it was due to taking Plavix which is a heart medication, over years of taking it, it had weakened the esophagus area and it looked like a slow bleed until it became this hughe tare on both sides, all other complications were due to this. God I never knew how much blood could come out of someone's body. Thank God we made it through.
Thanks for sharing this eye opening story! Our neighbor had her appendix rupture in Cancun and shared a similar horror story. I'm glad you made it home okay and you're man is so strong to recover from that ordeal
I'm just curious if his doctor is still having him take Plavix or is he taking something else now instead?
OMG....I was in tears by the time I finished reading this!! How horrible for you both to go through! I'm so glad that he's doing better. I can't even begin to imagine what you went through and how you handled it. I don't think I would've done as well. but just to let you know our travel insurance was bought a month ago! and thanks for the info about the numbers I will be sure to get them before we leave. God does work in mysterious ways, your hubby is not done here on earth just yet!...Definitely a trip you'll never forget, that's for sure!! D
