My friends and I will be in Cancun next month and we want to bring some inflatable boats with us. They're really awesome SS Dreamboat models with built-in cup holders and 6-pack coolers, so it's not like we could just find something like them when we arrive. They're small enough to fit into luggage easily when deflated, but should I expect any customs issues with this? Would they conceivably try and apply a "boat import charge" or something? Lol.

I doubt you would have any issues. It looks to me like a pool toy and I know I have seen many people at resorts that have brought their own inflatables.
I have never seen any rules about having this in your check in luggage nor any rules with customs.
I would just call it an inflatable toy if questioned. I think someone calling it a boat would be a far reach.

Actually your problem is not getting the "toys" on the plane. Your problem is that if customs stops you, you need to make sure you have a receipt for this "toy" or be prepared to pay a duty for importing it.

I would just take it out of the original packaging before putting it in your suitcase. Then they wouldn’t be able to stop you, because it would just be like bringing whatever other goofy stuff people bring in their suitcase.

Someone brought a giant inflatable swan a few weeks ago and it floated in the sexy pool most of the time I was there. I also brought 6 water noodles and had no problems.

They can stop you and ask for the cost of the item. Without a receipt its up to them to determine any cost they want to make money for customs. So bring it any way you want just carry your receipt and you avoid any problems.

You need a receipt no matter where you leave it since they will not check to see if you are taking it out of the country. So yes you will need a receipt or be prepared to pay a duty on importing an item that they assign a value to which will be far more that what you paid for it at home.
