I am normally very reticent to offer advice of this nature but given the specifics of your situation, here I go. If it were me, and I hope I'm never forced to make the decision that you are, given the pain level and the prognosis of the necrotic tissue advancing up my leg with the end result being amputation above the knee, I would save what I could and quickly. My wife works for an prosthetic office and she sees people every day that live completely normal lives after losing a lower leg. Think about no pain and no cane, sounds like a win-win to me. Hell, look at what Oscar Pistorius was able to accomplish as a double amputee, killing his wife not withstanding.

In my opinion no amount of pain is worth worrying about anyone's judgement! I have to say if the surgery improves your quality of life then do it!!! and if anyone ever makes fun of a true hero or anyone with a disability I will whoop ass!!!!

I appreciate your advice, knowing your wife works with a clinic that specializes in this kind of thing, and sees people living normal lives everyday puts me more at ease . It's not losing the leg that would bother me so much as much as the anxiety of waking up in recovery. They say you still feel like your leg is there. But I do thank you for your input, thanks Bro..

A dear friend of mine was diagnosed with a cancerous tumor in his left knee about three years ago. To make the story short, after two and a half years of continuous pain, operation after operation to try and save his leg. He finally decided to have his leg amputated from the knee below. That was 7 months ago. Right now he says that he should´ve done it sooner.

He walks with a cane but he´s slowly being less dependent of it. And he says he now feels very comfortable with his prothesis. I´m trying to convince him to come to TTR, Hopefully he says yes if not for our june trip, for the next one in the fall.

Your decision is a tough one

Very tough decision !!!! First off you served so in my books you have everything to be proud of. If this will ease pain and further damage that's a plus. As far as people's looking at you weird or treating you different they probably wouldn't be the kind of people anyone likes. I know I'd be happy to walk up shake your hand and enjoy multiple cold ones with you and after your 2-3 months of therapy you will be walking up to get the next round brother

    Just stay positive...

And on the DJ note.. I have another friend that will walk with a cane for the rest of his life due to a car accident breaking his back, followed by a staph infection, then another car accident mid-recovery... He wears morphine patches, and was pretty much bed-ridden. The only things that cure his pain are driving his lotus (Which causes him pain by the time he gets out), and hitting his turntables. I watched him spin for 90 minutes with no cane, standing up spinning some vinyl... Haven't seen him stand without his cane for longer than 15-20 minutes since the accident until that.
