Hubby is 6'3" so it was tight for him. I'm 5'11" and was a little tight for me too. To us, the worst was being charged for everything. We had layovers and they charged lots of baggage fees, plus made us transfer the luggage. Too many fees to remember (3 years ago). Had to pay for water/soda. For some reason I'm thinking they didn't offer alcohol on the flight....or maybe it was just way too expensive. Had I known, I would have brought my own bottle of water and a snack. Live and learn. If you don't expect too much, you will be fine. Hopefully your trip isn't too long.
I have flow out of BWI many time through southwest and deployments it's a nice airport good food selection when your waiting.
Thanks everyone! I will make sure to discuss with Brad so he is prepared. We do have a stop in FLL before the final leg to CUN so he will at least be able to stand and stretch for about an hour before we take off again. I appreciate the feed back! everything helps!
We've flown Spirit a few times in the last couple years, and we just booked another trip with them, so even though they're our least favorite, we don't hate them enough to pay more. First thing to know is that the baggage fees go up as your trip approaches, and if you wait to the airport, the fees are ridiculous. Reserve your luggage online ASAP--and be careful--you have to book them both ways! We got duped by this our first time, not realizing we'd paid only to take our bag, but not bring it home. Had to pay the airport rate that time. Also, carry-on costs more than checked. However, a really large "purse" doesn't count as a carry-on. I think if it fits under the seat, you don't have to pay. Also, you only get 40 pounds instead of 50, and their scales are calibrated on their side. Our bag "miraculously" gained 3 pounds between our house and the airport. Bastards. Seats are cramped, staff are apathetic, and they won't even serve you a cup of water. Still, we've never had a problem being bumped, late, or cancelled, which I guess is what really matters.
I don't mind them and have flown them lots. Most of their seats do not recline. And they charge for everything. Know that going in and just accept it.
Do the charge a lot more if you are over 40lbs? I'm pretty sure one bag is going to be extremely close to 40.
I think the worst part is the non-reclining seats. Im 6ft 0in and its hard to stretch the legs in under the seat in front of you if you cant recline it. A 2 hour flight or so is tolerable but dont fly 4 hours or more straight. I never paid for the upgrade seats but I might try that next time. I've flown out of BWI every time and they are always spot on the times.
We used to take them all the time from Florida to Cancun, but after they get done with all the fees and add ons your not saving anything. One time they even gave me a hard time for my wife medium size purse saying it was a carry on and I needed to pay for it. Now we use Jet Blue and are much happier.
