Hello Folks! We are two weeks out from our first trip to TTR. We are very excited and ready to meet everyone but I am now starting to have concerns over our means of air transportation. We are currently booked through Spirit Airlines out of Baltimore International. In just the last week I have seen several reports of Spirit Air running the LOWEST on the customer service rankings. Has anyone every used Spirit Airlines? and if so, what has your experience been? I totally get that you get what you pay for and we are expecting as much given these recent reports, but I would like to know if anyone has actually used them. At least if we have some idea of current goings on we can better manage our expectations. Any help, advise, suggestions appreciated! Michele and Brad
Sorry, I don't really have much to say about Spirit Airlines specifically. But what time is your flight out? I always book the earliest flight possible. Philadelphia airport is one of the worst in the country, and it is one of US airways main hubs. I hate US air! I traveled 90% of the time for 5+ years early in my career, and had to use US airways most of the time. 4 out 5 flights had problems. I found that booking the earliest possible flight is the way to go. This way the airport doesn't start to get all messed up as the day goes on. Hopefully you have something early, and get to the resort asap. Next week we leave at 7:40 and arrive at 10:30. First flight of the day, and so far in 3 trips to Mexico, we haven't had any issues.
Three weeks for me, and in the same boat. I read Spirit's faqs and seems most of the complaints are from not knowing ahead of time that they charge for everything and squeeze as many in as possible. Trying to stay optimistic but I am concerned.
We have friends that have used Spirit many times from Pittsburgh to Myrtle Beach and Florida. They have generally been satisfied, occasional late departure, but fine otherwise.
We booked spirit out of detroit for Our last 2 trips. Mostly because of flight times back to the states. They leave later in the afternoon than the other carriers. It was fine. Go online and pay for your checked baggage before you check in and it will save you some $$
I actually am very familiar with Philly Airport and have traveled from it many times so I am pretty comfortable there but we are actually going from BWI airport this time because it was about a $1000 cheaper round trip to fly of out BWI. Not too familiar with BWI but I have been there before so I hope it wont be too bad. Luckily we do have an early flight out of BWI at 6:45am. So my thought is that since it is most likely one of the first flights out of that international terminal the chances of it being delayed are slim. We have already paid for our luggage and picked (and paid for) semi larger seats so I am hoping that we wont have to fork over any extra fees at the airport check in. And we know there will be no in flight beverages or snacks unless we purchase them. Managing expectations is my biggest concern. I am a very frequent flyer and I am good with the bare bones type service Spirit is advertising... but Brad on the other hand, is a slightly larger/taller guy and he is not very patient... so this could be a very interesting flight to start of the honeymoon festivities.
We flew Spirit a couple of years ago (out of DFW). The flight was okay, and on-time if I recall. It was the extra fees that got us (carry on bag? boarding pass?). All in all, it turned out to be just as expensive as any other airline. But, they got us there safely.
Thanks! We did book all that a head of time. Luckily we are still saving a good deal of money even having to pay for this. And yes we picked Spirit for the early times out and the later return times so we can at TTR as long as possible. How were the seats? I am hearing that even the (slightly) larger seats are pretty tight. Brad is 6'2". I am afraid he will be pretty uncomfortable. I already promised he can invade my leg room if needed since Im a good deal shorter than him.
We have used Spirit several times due to the lowest price. The seat are uncomfortable. Like you stated...ALL snacks and drinks have to be purchased (Even water). My husband is 6'3 and he had NO leg room in the regular seats. The upgraded seats (Emergency exits) are worth the extra money.
We have flown them once, DFW to New Orleans last fall. They do nickle and dime (or rather 5 and 10 dollar) for everything, but you know that ahead of time. Bring your own water on the place etc. The have the smallest spacing between rows of all the airlines, if I am remembering correctly. It was cramped on the plane, and we both remarked that the NO trip was ok at 2 hours, but we would be reluctant to use them for a longer trip, regardless of the savings. Our opinion and observations. sf
