Crazy air fares! Timing is everything

Yesterday I went online to check prices for our October trip. The fare comes up at $303 so I call Melissa and she clears the dates with her boss. I am extremely excited and I book it. We have never flown down to Cancun for less than $425. This morning I go in and look because another friend asked about our flight and wanted to get the flight number and stuff. This morning the same flight is $490. Woohoo, I am one happy guy right now.

 

One reason for such price changes is you bought the last Economy seat, or only Exit seats ($$ more) are available. The search engines often don't show such differences.

Also the low fuel prices should start to show up on tickect prices

 

I booked through Orbitz on Tuesday and got airfare with direct flights and 4 nights in September for 1250 for both. My suggestion is to look at the dates online and then call. They gave me a better price over the phone. Then when I told them I wasn't sure if I was ready to book they took off another $150 to book at that moment.

 

I look regularly and there is always flucuations. Last week, the best price I saw was $459.

American airlines pretty much controls everything flying out of DFW. But now that the Wright Amendment has ended they are getting competition from Southwest. And now Viva AeroMexico just moved in and will be doing flights to Cancun. So we should start to get a little better rates just ftom the competition.

 

Flight prices are ridiculous right now for Oct for some reason. 3 months ago it was $350 from Ohio and $400 from New Jersey. Now it's running $650 - $700 and been staying steady for about the last 2 months. I've never paid more than $400 or so from Ohio for Oct.

 

Hopefully, Orbitz will extend the 150vaca promo into October. Maybe, will try the phone call.

 

Last October we got flights from buffalo on southwest for $295. Best deal I ever saw for cancun.

 

Don't know about you guys, I just checked "last minute airfare sales" for several different departures dates (for 2) for 11 nights from Ottawa...best price with crappy flight times (12 + hours) was $1450 CDN up to $1725 for semi decent flights. I miss the not too distant past when we had $600-700 flights for both of us...and oil was higher then than it is now. BOHICA!!!

We've booked and re-booked twice.

Check morning and night every single day. The price fluctuation is amazing! Very likely we'll re-book a couple more times before our trip!
