Don't eat rice that's been standing, use hand gel, take a prebiotic, stay hydrated..one of the main causes of stomach upsets, and use bottled water for teeth, its not what comes out of the taps its what lives in them as well.
I started taking extra vitamins about a week ago and will continue until after our trip. I also will drink lots of water to stay hydrated while I am drinking my face off. That being said....I don't know if it actually works or not, but I figure it can't hurt to try and prepare you body for the shenanigans as best you can.
Good question. I just happened to post this very topic yesterday. Your best option is not only a Probiotic, but a Probiotic that includes S. Boulardii (Saccharomyces Boulardii). It should be taken at least one if not two weeks before your trip to prepare the gut. S. Boulardii is the key component that is used to address Traveler's Diarrhea issues. (Google it) This will significantly reduce the likeliness of having any digestive tract related issues during and after your trip. As you are likely aware, probiotics can be purchased at any pharmacy, including Wal-Mart. As an FYI, I am certified in nutrition and this is what I recommended. If you have any other health issues, be certain to check with your primary care physician before taking a probiotic. Enjoy you trip!!!!

We make Probiotic Shakes a couple times a week - they are very good for you, and really good tasting. A nurse practitioner / health counselor friend of ours gave us the recipe. Here are ingredients -- but you can really add whatever you want as long as you get the base items in there. 1. 1 cup liquid Kefir* ** - full of active probiotics - you can find it at most grocery stores 2. 1 cup Almond Milk - usually vanilla - much better for you than dairy milk (High in Antioxidants) - we use 'original sweetened' 3. 1 cup Greek Yogurt** - you want something with live cultures - vanilla or plain 4. 1 Banana 5. 1 scoop Whey - whatever kind you want - stick with vanilla flavor 6. 1 cup whatever fresh fruit you like - rasberries, kiwi, strawberries, blueberries (best) 7. 1 tablespoon peanut butter (for flavor) Blend it all together - should last you 2 days. Drink one glass in the morning and you can do a 20 mile bike ride without being hungry BTW - recipie will not bother you if you are lactose-intolerant * Unlike yogurt, which contains transient beneficial bacteria, the bacteria in kefir colonizes the intestinal tract, making it an excellent choice for those who have been on antibiotic treatments ** S. Thermophilus, L. Bulgaricus, L. Acidophilus and Bifidus

This was a post from awhile back. Hey all. For what it is worth, I was sick one of our trips. I went over to the Pharmacia across the street. I talked to the Pharmacist about my symptoms. Nausea, cramping, etc. Montezuma Revenge basically. He recommended a product called Flagonase SP?? Basically, I took one pill every 8 hours. Works like a charm and got me feeling better in no time. I bought some to bring back home. It helps with flu symptoms and much more. If you have something else that truly ails you other than Alcohol, remember to talk to the Pharmacist or the locals.
Some years back I went by myself to Mexico City on business. I speak broken Spanish, and got MR on the second night - doubled over in pain for a while. Went down to Pharmacia to see what the had to help me - they laughed -- M O N T E Z U M A A A A A ! Chuckle Chuckle Chuckle Didn't seem very funny to me at the time...
In addition to taking probiotics we also take a natural immune boosting formula for several weeks before and during our stay. That helps the body ward off anything it might encounter from the a/c mold to germs from another land, not just Mexico but from wherever other guests come from, that we are not used to. It works, it's good for you and it's cheap insurance for a good, fun trip. Just my two cents worth. Plus, we make a concerted effort to stay hydrated and take electrolyte supplements while we are there. It helps keep us in the party, having fun and to avoid nasty hangovers.
