Word of caution. I wouldn't use an ATM at any resort. Been several instances (including us) of having debit card compromised. Been several discussions about it on here in the past. Airport or bank is probably safest.

As a side note, last July I asked our favorite bartender Pedro if he preferred dollars or pesos. His reply was...."I prefer money". lol

    Hi Mr & Mrs Kimo.
Just back from TTR. You are in for a fantastic time. Was our first time there and was our best holiday ever.
We changed £500 to Paso's in the UK at an exchange rate of 21.09, we also took £500 with us. We changed that in the kiosk across from TTR and got 23.21
No need at all to change to Dollars as we found tipping etc. very simple in Paso's.
We are in Nottingham by the way only a stones throw away from you guys.
Not that we are seasoned veterans but if you would like any TTR tips feel free to pm us.

US dollars are easily used, traded, by staff. There is another point to consider: the exchange rate changes and is different based on where you exchange. At night or during the day, after drinking A LOT, it is not the best time to be doing math ( ie, ok, so exchange rate is 12.75, make it 13, so i would tip $15 so that would be ....$195 pesos, etc) then you pull out all these colored bills in different denominations that you do not recognize on sight, you actually have to look at each one carefully. On top of that, mentally $195 sounds high. But good service and i say $20 is well deserved and not too high.

Sure they like the $20 bill and I don't have to think, just get to pay attention to my beautiful date

Yes...but you are American. The OP is not.

If I were in from the US, hands down I would just us US money. Our UK friends and Canadians are different. We will have to convert to something....the question is to what?

I worried about this a lot before our first trip. I bring my Boobs Cruise money and USA Transfer money in US and the rest is all Pesos. Things in the store are priced in Pesos, I tip in Pesos, and I know I won't be screwed on a conversion. The first day or so I was a little confused but after that it was 100% fine.

Ukcouple111 you may regret that offer when we harass you lol.
I (Mr Kimo) used to work in Nottingham. Had some decent nights out there too.

We take almost all pesos for what we will need. We go to the bank and request almost all 20 peso notes. These are waterproof so you can keep them in your swim trunks when in the pool, then when you give a tip just give them a wipe and their fine unlike US dollars which will be all soggy.
The bank orders in what we want with no hassles, takes about a week though as we usually get 300 or so notes.
