Little bit confused ... Have been to many all inclusive resorts in Europe over the past five years and never seen any money exchanged or tips given to waiters / room staff etc etc.

If tips are allowed for at TTR how much a dollar or more and is this just for drinks at the pool or all over the resort ?

    Thanks in advance

Mexico is different to Europe - much more like the US where wages are low and staff rely on tips to supplement their income. If you can, reserve tips for waiters, bar staff and maids as a minimum. You won't get bad service for not tipping, but I wouldn't dream of not tipping. As a guide this is what I bring with me:

Taxi transfer guy - $20 MXN
    Porter - $20 MXN
    Maid - $50 MXN / day
Breakfast wait staff - $50 MXN / meal
Lunch wait staff - $50 MXN / meal
    Dinner (buffet) - $70 MXN / meal
Dinner (Mexican or Seafood restaurant) - $100 MXN / meal
Dinner (Asian or Italian) - $200 MXN / meal
Late night burger bar - $20 MXN / visit
Bar staff - $20 MXN / round of drinks (more if it's a big round of shots)

No idea if this is too much or too little, but if feels about right for me and it's what I know I can afford.

tip what you can afford!! some people tip high, and some whatever they can. I think by tipping you show appreciation for a service. but you don't have to break the bank doing it. smile, be courteous, let them know you are aware of how hard they work. it goes along way.

Sorry, MXN is Mexican Pesos, like USD for US Dollar. $20 MXN is equivalent to around £1, and just over $1 USD.

Agree with Trish...we just got back and did the following:

50 Pesos per day for maid service ($5) - meant we always had lots of bottled water, beer etc
I started tipping 20 Pesos ($2) at PatyOs everytime I went to the bar for the first 4 or 5 times. The guys definitely recognized this and often had my drinks ready when they saw me coming.
At the start of the day at the bikini bar by quiet pool would give Manuel 50 Pesos and on days when I knew we would drink more 100 Pesos. Manuel would often leave the bar to come to our chairs at poolside to give us drinks throughout the day.
For reservation dinners it would just depend on service. Never less than 100 Pesos and we gave 200 Pesos for our Italian dinner because our server was great.

So - we tipped the following all in $Cdn - $35 for the week for our maid service, $35-$50 for pool side bar, $50 for Paty'O bar service, and $50 for 3 restaurant reservations. Throw in $5 for bellhop to bring bags to room. Total - around $200. All of our service was great, drinks were stronger than anything we would get at home, food was terrific. What more could you ask for for around $200-$250 for 7 days!
