So then what would happen to all of us Mayhemers that have already booked the resort and flights? There are a lot of us. Sorry Charlie, you're out the money? That would suck.

Not much a person can do other than to wait to hear the details. And yes the translated article was hard to read!

If I remember right from the first time I was told about this by Premier staff, they weren't going to shut the resort down but shut down the lobby and have a temporary lobby over by the corner in the quiet pool side.

I agree that resort is in need of some major renovations but I think they would be making a mistake to build an 8 story tower, block the sun and change the whole feel of the resort. Stick with their proven concept yet modernize the place and fix what's broken, (literally and metaphorically) and do some additions/upgrades like hot tubs, a retractable roof over Paty'Os, etc. They would not have to close the resort to do those things. But, to demolish the heart of the resort and build a new 8 story building in the close quarters there? Oh yeah, were talking a long closure to accomplish that in the land of manana.

It was told to a couple just last week that was taking the premier tour that the resort would be closing its doors for several months for construction and renovations.

10 months could easily turn into 2 years in the construction world.

It's gonna be a tough sell to get new members there. On one hand I agree that much of the resort is overdue for renovations. On the other I would want to see what ten months of renovations do before I commit to a membership.

Yes. But all things considered, they still have to obtain permits. That may take awhile.

With the publication of the article in today's local newspaper it looks like the cat is out of the bag so I can now chip in with information that I have heard from reliable sources. I've known for a while now about the current plans but was told under commercial confidentiality, and in order to maintain a good relationship with the hotel I think it was important to respect that.

First, a little conjecture. The plans that were previously mentioned about a year ago I think have been pretty much shelved in favor of a much grander project. What we are looking at now is a complete shutdown, levelling of the site and total rebuild, although I guess that some outlying areas of the current hotel may well remain.

I understand the project to be a $34 Million investment and that funding has already been secured. Contrary to a previous recent post the concept will not change and the current owners will remain the owners. I think it's fair to say that the hotel will be considered more upscale than it is presently once complete.

The tentative date for shutdown I was told is from June 2015 thru December 2015. The newspaper does say 10 months, but I heard 6. However, we all know how the timetables of such construction projects can slip and slide.

Permits are still awaited and can take a long time to come through, however, I am sure they will be approved as there is a city commitment to build an extra 46,000 hotel rooms in Cancun over the next 16 years

The main feature will be a central tower block, the newspaper says 8 storeys, I heard 10. I heard the hotel will have approx 800 rooms when complete, the newspaper says 500 (although their own figures add up to 600).

My understanding is the hotel will have two tiers, the current lobby will become offices on the lower tier and a raised entrance way will lead to the new lobby on the 2nd tier. I have not seen the plans but understand that there will be new locations for pools, bars, restaurants etc.

Forget about shade over the sexy pool, crowds at Paty O's and restaurants etc. Everything is changing, it will be unrecognisable from what we know today.
