I'm more comfortable tipping in money where the denominations are clear and real (to me) and in an amount I find reasonable. It never occurred to me it might be a burden for the locals to exchange it on their own. Everyone always seems so grateful I don't believe its an issue.
If I go to us and I have dollar I'll tip in dollar / 5$ ! If I don't have any then Pesos! =] And if I have a shit load of pesos Like alot I just leave them to the maid with 1-2$ dependa how much I have in pesos Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In Ottawa I use the Currency exchange ( Donald and St Laurent) instead of banks,,, they had a lot better rates,, and did not have to order the smalll notes .
We normally exchange our money at the bank before leaving we usually take a few hundred in US bills and the balance in Pesos 20,50 and 100 notes. We tried at the front desk to break a US bill at the front desk and they told us at the time they only had pesos.
Hmmm reading this post has made me rethink my plan. I normally tip in US dollars, and it's helpful because once drunk I still understand 5 bucks = 5 bucks. I feel that I start to get confused about 6pm, and I either under or overdo it. I see that Steve said that it is better to tip for the Boobs Cruise in Pesos. So like if my plan was tip (2) $20 US - one for me and one for my wife, I would do (3) 200's? Is too much, or not enough? Last year I only had a $20 US left on the cruise and I felt bad it wasn’t enough because it was my first time, and I had no idea what I was getting into. Chinos told me that the one crew member liked my flip flops as I was leaving. I am not sure how the conversation went, but I ended up giving them to him. They were like brand new and like 35 bucks from Pac Sun. I think they liked this, or maybe I was just part of some crew joke where you trick the stupid guy at the end??!!
Either is fine really. The crew always end up with some Dollars that have to be exchanged anyway. Pesos would only be more convenient if everyone used them, but while Mexico allows their use I don't think that will ever happen. As Nikki & Ira mentioned above $40 USD is around 500 Pesos, so if you were to tip 600 Pesos that would be a higher value.
Great info as always Steve. Have to re-think my plan as well. Didn't think I could get pesos at my local US bank. But will ask.
