We took a cue from several of you and brought 6 Damp-Rids (they had a ton of water in them after just 6 days) and Lysol spray and wipes. When we got into our room, and it smelled of mold, I pulled the a/c filter (it was disgusting and maintenance brought us a new one) and Lysol'd the crap out of the entire system and the drapes because they had mold growing on them too. I was a property insurance adjuster for years and I was the blood hound for mold because I am very sensitive to it. My sinuses, the inside of my mouth and my eyes all get very irritated from it. I noticed it starting right away but it seemed to lessen after a little work on the room. After 2 days though I noticed, especially in the morning, I had a very tight chest and would start coughing crap out of my lungs. Once we were out of the room and in the warm air for awhile it would clear up but each day got a bit worse but I was fine when we got home. We were in other rooms that did not have the mold smell though so I'm not sure why some rooms have it and some don't. Bottom line....don't go nuts but bring a basic kit to deal with the mold and you should be alright. I also made a point of not turning the a/c off or leaving doors open because that would undo the dehumidifying that the Damp-Rids were doing. I have never used them before but I was impressed.
We packed it in our checked bags. We didn't want to deal with going to Wal-Mart on our vacation. It's bad enough to go there at home.
I get the small trial size cans.. My throat closes by mid trip. Not that drinking and yelling help any, but when I wake up its the worst. Guido did you have an individual unit? Cuz I just had a vent in the ceiling in our room. I sprayed that, but knew that was not going to help one bit.. Blah
Hi Mel, we had the type with the return air in the entry hall and and a single register at the end blowing into the room. I pulled the return air filter and pretty much emptied a can of Lysol all over up inside the thing. That is how I discovered that the filter was filthy and I had maintenance bring us a new one. I think that spraying the mold on the drapes probably made a difference too. And those Damp-Rid bags pulled a ton of moisture out of the air so it couldn't feed the mold.
