It apparently depends on which customs officer you get. We talked to 2 different couples when there May 1-6 and one couple got charged the $45 and the other, $140. Both said they were fine with them just being confiscated but customs wouldn't accept that as an option. I don't smoke so no clue on prices but if peeps on here say they are cheaper there, I say just bring the 10 packs so you don't risk it. Even as a non-smoker, I say that is COMPLETE BS that they are able to get away with that kind of crap at customs. But, it is what it is.
Especially when you can buy them for $10 extra a carton accross the street from TTR than at the airport!
Is it possible to buy smokes at the airport duty free shops upon arrival to Cancun? I remember walking through there on the way out of Cancun, but can't remember if you can get there when arriving. Thanks for any info you can give me.
I didn't see Duty Free coming out but that was our first flight to Cancun so not sure if there are multiple exits?? Or an alternative way to route through Duty Free? Someone posted about that in March or April but I don't remember what the consensus was or if one was ever achieved
Yep, it is possible to buy cigs/liquor at the duty free when arriving in Cancun. I purchased a few cigars and didn't have any problems. The duty free is after you pick up your luggage and before you hit the green/red light button. I have no idea if there is a limit or anything at this duty free. I like knowing that my cigars were safe/authentic so I try to remember to buy them from duty free after arriving.
American Friends bought extra smokes at the duty free in Cancun and ended up having to return them.. and it was a bit of a hassle.. We were not given the choice we had to pay the 120.00 duty.
Why did they have to return them? Are the customs agents charging for the smokes purchased in the Cancun airport?
