I think I've read something on here before about Canadians not wanting to have a layover in the US. We are going to be booking our October trip soon and because we are coming from a small airport I'm not seeing much options other then a stop at the Newark airport. I can't find any Toronto/Montreal stops (as of now). What is the problem with doing this? Is it because of customs? Does anybody have any insight?

Not Canadian but you will have to go through security/customs twice with that kind of layover. Even US with US stops have to do security twice on the way back. On the way to Cancun, I don't think they do. But on our way back, after we got our luggage, everyone with connecting flights from Orlando had to get into another security line after getting their luggage from the Cancun flight. Rome and I looked at each other, said "Fuck that! We are only doing direct flights!" Of course, we are lucky and can do that so I know, fuck us :)

Right so you land in the US. Go thru Customs and then likely have to go back thru security. You need 1.5 hours min to be safe.

I have done it I would not do it without at least a2 hour layover you also have to claim and recheck your checked baggage... You will also have issues with any duty free shopping you may have done

We fly from Ottawa, and would prefer a direct flight but those are few and far between. Toronto/Montreal stopover is great, but again - you can't always get those either. Our last trip we stopped in Philadelphia and had 1 hour and 45 minutes in between planes. We had time to eat breakfast and found ourselves killing time, to be honest. This time it's just about 1 hour and 30 minutes between planes. We knew it would be close - hopefully there won't be any problems!

Its looking like a 2 hours and 15 minutes at the Newark airport. I'm gonna keep looking to see if I can tweak the days or departure airport to get a stop at Montreal or Toronto.

Is there a US city your close to you that you can drive to and fly from? I lived 2 hrs from detroit so I always flew out of detroit. You clear customs when you drive over so u don't have to clear customs for any layover. Good luck!

It depends where you're flying from. Vancouver, Calgary, Edmonton, Toronto and Montreal you would clear customs for the US before boarding and your bags could clear straight through.

Other airports you would as Donald said, clear customs, claim your bag etc etc and likely have to clear security again.

The other "speed up" is to get Nexus clearance. Coming back from Mexico in April, I was 5 min in Customs in Toronto.......but wound up waiting for bags still.
