I honestly don't see the need to take anything but US currency. The last time I were there, i took some pesos but found myself exchanging into US the next day. Its not needed and it really doesn't help you all that much (why juggle two different currencies?). I usually take about $500 in $1 bills, and about $5000 in 20s, 10s and 5s.

Why did you have trouble with scotiabank? I have never had a problem with them... They are supposed to order you what you ask for.... It usually takes a couple of days to come in but you should have no problem. I am sorry that you got the wrong information from that branch.you should file a complaint with their care department, they might be offering this wrong info to others as well...

I got the exact same line from Scotia Bank last year. I have accounts at both banks.

They cannot promise the denomination that will come in at Scotiabank

CIBC will order the denomination that you ask for and call you when it comes in. ( you have to order, comes in on second busness day)

Jesse is right on that one.

Taking into consideration your currency is Canadian

The legal currency in Mexico is Pesos

It has been mentioned on here that the cruise personnel go and convert their USD into pesos right after the cruise.

Every time time you convert money you pay a fee 2 to 12 % and loose that

So if you pay to convert Canadian to USD then the Mexicans have to pay to convert USD to Pesos. thats a double hit.

Waiters and staff will accept anything for tips , don't look a gift horse in the mouth .

The pesos are also smaller and waterproof

If your American then just bring your ones, and give less money to the Rich banks.

I find at Scotiabank not everyone is on the same page...one says this and another says that about currency ordering...then you speak with a supervisor to find out the first two are both wrong. Then to top it off one or both of the first people you spoke with will contradict what you were just told by the supervisor!!! AND I find their fees outrageous on currency exchange...I recently exchanged 60 Euro back to Canadian and got a lousy exchange rate and was charged a $19.95 fee. I walked out of there with something like $73.

Don't get me wrong there are good people at Scotiabank but they need to get their collective shit together on what is what.

To be honest we've never exchanged and always have used USD dollars for both tips as well as any off site excursions we may take. Never have had a problem, even on Isla Mujeres. Also never brought anything larger than a $20. US ones, fives and tens go a long way in making your vacation a lot more pleasant.
