That is sadly not an unheard of situation. Be especially wary of taxi drivers who offer to take you in their cab free of charge to buy weed or whatever. It's happened that they take you to the place to buy only to be confronted by a Police Officer. The choice is split your wallet contents 50/50 between the two of them or go to jail. There is no crime committed but try explaining that! There is alcohol, there is sunshine, there are great party people, there is laughter and there is sex. How many more highs does anyone need ?
The real unreported danger in Negril, Jamaica is the total lack of a Hospital or any working EMT services. A thread now on the Jamaica forums about a tourist getting hit by a Jet Ski and dies on the beach while two Negril Police officers look on and then just leave. If you have a heart attack, stroke or a really serious accident, you are just plain out dead !!! The Jamaican drug dealing is very bad, However this is WORSE !!! I'm sure no one on Cancuncare ever gets really sick, but its something to consider.
If I smoked that stuff I'd probably eat the entire dessert table at the buffet and wouldn't fit in my seat to fly back home!
Mostly, we never leave the resort - except on Steve's Boobs Cruise. I'm perfectly happy drinking Dos Equis...so no experimenting with the wacky stuff for us.
In Cancun they seem to be more low key when offering, and it happens less. In Jamaica they are very forward and pushy, and it happens from almost every local you run into.
Just read that, those dam jet skis always run too close to the beach, however 7 Mile is a public beach and there is money to be made from the tourists, hope they change the rules for operating one down there, or come up with something.
And that is usually all you have to say, "nope I get drug tested back home" the word will spread and you should be left alone, buy once and the same thing, the word will spread. We do the same thing with the time share pitch, "nope we are teacher's, have to save all year to come here". Moving on-
we travelled a lot to Mexico and Jamaica, about twice a year for the last 10 years, we have been offered every drug imaginable by the vendors, but never had any problems with them when saying no. They are easy to stop if you look around, in Jamaica when you see the jet skies going back and forth with the same person, that's the supplier, if you wave a hello, he's there in a second. Cancun is more low key but really easy excess to every drug that exist, Our group had problems with a few single guys last year at the resort , more to the fact that these guys were drunk and extremely come on cocaine,,,, sniffing there stuff in the public bathroom, especially the one that really tried to kick down my room door at 4.30 in the morning, they were dealt with pretty quick, was still the best vacation ever,,,,,,,,
