We really are planning that this will be a vacation without the trappings and leashes of our day to day lives and, as such, don't plan to be spending much time online. That said, I am a mom and always feel the need around mid-week to send the kids a check in message. Do you know of any place, off the resort, where we might find some free wifi? We plan on doing a bit of the tourist-trap things in town and wondered if it was likely that we would find some. I'm reluctant to purchase it at the hotel as I've heard questions about reliability and, honestly, I feel that it would be nice if resorts offered guests complimentary access - perhaps limiting to 30 minutes per day.
It's about $5 US to use the resort computers for 30 minutes. I had a hard time even using that for the "check in" we mommies like to make. I ended up giving my time to another couple who were sharing a screen. I found the service to be quite speedy and was able to do whatever seemed important at the time!
In think we paid $10. Per day it was well worth it, no connection problems. I spend about an hour every morning on laptop for work & get international service on my phone for the week. We would let others come over to our room so they could Skype the kids.
Down by the ferry there is a little tiki bar called Pirate's Tavern. They have some good drinks and free wifi. D
I've always been able to get sufficient cell service to use the browser on my phone. Texts are no problem at all.
If you are a rogers customer it will cost $50 for 100 sent texts, reduced roaming fees and expensive LD plan for Mexico...so I don't suggest using your phone. Cell phone highway robbery here in Canada! I'd go for the $5 / 30 minute plan at the lobby myself.
This is what we did the last time we were there - it was a nice walk (and sometimes you need a break from the resort!) and we'd get a drink and deal with email and everyday life.
