[Now, "red" hatched circle, the probability of this storm becoming a tropical cyclone having increased.] At 5 AM, Wednesday, it's very windy here in central Cancun. We have had wind and rains as part of a very unstable weather pattern over the last two weeks; but, we've not had the flooding other parts of Mexico have experienced, on both east and west coasts of the country. What follows is a slideshow of what has happened in just one coastal city, Acapulco, far from Cancun, as a result of what has been a "perfect storm". http://news.yahoo.com/desperate-thousands-try-escape-cut-off-acapulco-042034822.html
70% chance of becoming a cyclone within the next 48 hours and 80% chance of becoming a tropical cyclone within the 5 days, according to National Hurricane center in Miami. A recon-flight is apparently scheduled for later today to try to determine it more accurately. Get water, is my advice. Secure pets, kids and belongings and get some crackers, canned goods if you feel it necessary. We should know by tonight if it converts into a, and I quote the Proteccion Civil here in Cancun, "cyclone, trop cyclone, hurricane, storm or simply more rain"...
That's a bit over the top Rawkus The system they are talking about developing is on top of us now. The centre of it is already on the other side of the peninsula a few hundred miles away and moving away. By the time it develops (in 2 - 5 days) if it does develop at all, it will be well away from here.
Steve: I like to be prepared - sue me, haha Im just stating the possibilities given by the Proteccion Civil, nothing more, nothing less. Sunyaxchen and Yaxchilan floods daily the last month, so even if "only" extra rain, for some it could be a whole lot of difference. Ive had water enter the flat these days, so extra rain for me = whole lotta "fun" ahead of me EDIT: Just saw ur picture now. Looks good! Miami Hurricane Center seems to have a different path last time I checked. Talking about Eastern Mexico and Yucatan peninsula. I now have my 3 garrafones of water and a brand new squidgy = Im set. Only beers thats missing
This is not high season, weather this time of the year is one of the reasons. It offers bargains for those willing to live with a little uncertainty. I, for one, love to sit under a palapa, sipping a beer, watching a tropical rain fall. Unfortunately, with the unstable weather recently we've also had a lot of wind, which changes the image, just a little.... Still, it's relatively warm, and for many, this would not seem at all bad. Being on vacation, with little or nothing to do except drink and chill permits enjoying all kinds of weather. I call this effect, "stormy Caribbean" and we adopted a color scheme which reflects that theme in our kitchen. It's still "Caribbean" which, except for all the most jaded, is close to ideal, when you got nothin' to do, and the livins easy....
Have you considered Sandbagging. Out here at Alfredo V. Bonfil, just a little bit of rain today, considering it is suppose to be more or less rainy season, not unexpected. sams has 2 10L jugs of water for 30 pesos pretty sweet deal imo. You can get like 1000 sandbags online for like $250, if you are worried about flooding filling some sand bags could help.. bear in mind I'm not sure where you can get sand or dirt from around here. Its actually a little entertaining to watch the punch buggies maneuver from one side of the road to the other to avoid the large puddles I can imagine what a hurricane would be like.. today there was a mad line up of cars due to the teacher protests.. they rerouted traffic through bonfil as the route to the airport was picketted on both sides. None the less i highly doubt there would be a hurricane with the forcast... it would be both sad and neat as authentic tourism.. I experienced my first earthquake in Mexico, it would be crazy to experience my first hurricane too. Really good authentic tourism. You can't get experiences like that in Northern Ontario.
It's 5 AM and we have partly cloudy skies, for a change. It's windy, but it looks like we might see some sun today....
We had a partly cloudy night, with a full moon. Beautiful! It's now 7 AM, with broken clouds. I expect today to be much like it was yesterday, with partly cloudy skies, lots of sun, hot and humid, and little or no rain.
Tomorrow looks like it's going to be a great day, with high thin clouds, lots of sun and warm weather. The "perfect storm" is just a memory....
