So the last time we went to TTR (a year ago). We had a travel advisement saying to bring Pesos instead of the American dollar. But once on the resort it and also at some of the bars on the strip seemed as though the American Dollar was still most popular.

What is everyone else's thoughts on this???

Most of the travellers seem to be American so I'm guessing that's one reason. Also, it's a pretty common feeling by most people that American is preferred. We brought pesos for a couple reasons. First, we heard that all the staff end up having to exchange to pesos for most of their daily expenses anyways, but the bigger reason is that the 20 peso bill (about $1.30 American) is waterproof. Just kept a bunch in my board shorts all day and was good to go. Just a heads up, our bank needed like 2 days notice to get it for us.

That's a great idea. I hate always having to go get tip money from our bag by the chairs. The bill is really waterproof?? that's cool.

Bring dollars and forget the pesos unless you really need it. The current rate of exchange at Wal Mart this evening is 12.95 pesos to a dollar. At the airport it's 12.00 a few days ago. At exchange offices it runs average 12-12.45 to the dollar.

As a courtesy to the Mexicans, who work 6 days a week and probably have better things to do on their day off, bring pesos :)

I've never brought pesos...we never leave the resort except for the Boobs Cruise though. If I was a shopper, I might think about it...but I'd rather go to the dentist than shop on vacation. As to the tips, I use dollars. I get that it's extra work for the staff to exchange, but since they will always receive dollars from some of the guests, I figure it doesn't make much difference since no matter how many tips are in pesos, there will always be some dollars to exchange.

Since you, like me, are Canadian and you are already going to the trouble of getting money in a different currency than your own for your trip why wouldn't you get the currency of the country you are travelling to?

We usually get 5000 pesos and 500 U.S. If you go shopping... Pay in pesos... Otherwise the market stores will hose you on the exchange rate
