Since we are in the pool all day I keep my money in my board short pocket. It gets wet. But figure wet money is better than no money. I have never had a tip turned down because the money is wet.
Are dollars preferred over pesos or the other way? I work at a bank so I picked up some pesos today, I'll prolly end up carrying both, just wondering if one was favored over the other
And do realize that change (American and Canadian) is worthless to them. I've used.ynb n for them, I've exchanged a bunch for my boys over the years.
I'd agree with that. Hotel staff do make very poor basic wages by most of our standards, but it isnt quite as low as $10 a week - $10 probably wouldn't cover their bus fare or gas. They do rely on tips to boost their pay packet though, so please tip generously - they work so hard for your pleasure.
Re Dollars or Pesos for tips, they'll happily accept either. Though bear in mind that if you tip in US they cant go pay their rent, mortgage, electric or phone bill with Dollars and most of the shops out where they live (usually the far outreaches of Cancun) wont accept dollars either or will offer a very poor rate. The guys work a 6 day week, and probably would rather not spend that one day off exchanging money. Pesos if you can, but Dollars are also appreciated.
Good insider info from Steve - thanks for that. At home, tipping those in service industries is common practice, so it seems only natural to do the same when on vacation. I worked for years in bars and restaurants, so I've experienced both sides. Along with tipping, just as important is to smile and show kindness and respect to the employees working long hours to make your vacation something to remember.
For what the staff does for you in Mexico, they work their ass off compaired to what is expected in a tip back in the US. These guys work with a smile on their face and do everything above and beyond what is expected. Tell me where they do this in your home town but expect you to leave a 20% tip? We always tip everyone from the bartenders, to the front desk, waiters and the room staff. It makes your day to walk into your room with a full refrigerator of beer, water and sodas with a made up room with your towels made into some new animal every day. If they go to this length to put a smile on your face, put one on theirs and their families by tipping them. PAY IT FORWARD, never know when you will be on the recieving side!!!
lt's amazing how the staff know your name and recognise you even after 1 trip. I don't know how they do it with the thousand or so guests they must serve between your trips.
