So the very, very few times I've traveled internationally, I carried pretty much no cash with me. I discovered the hard way difficulties of this when I got to England and discovered the whole chip + pin thing that makes using an American CC no bueno. So I'm wondering how you guys travel as far as cash/funds go for Cancun? We've all heard border horror stories, so is it easier to pull USD once I'm there and travel light in cash, or pull more of my cash before leaving and keep it close to my person? Any advice would be awesome.
We take cash, cash, and more cash. We never use cards in Mexico. I take that back, we did use a card at a ''fancy'' restaurant one time and they made a magnetic copy of the card and charged over $10,000 on it. We have never ever had a problem with our U.S. dollars in Mexico though.
cash is best. expect to spend around $100 USD per day per person. if all else fails, use the ATM next to the small shop in front of the resort. the charge was just under $4 usd
I tip with peso and use credit card for everything else make sure to call your CC company to tell then your traveling to Mexico. The Peso's are water proof notes (20 ) works out to $ 1.66 or so
Limit the amount of cash you take. Talk to your bank. Of you don't make a charge to your credit card you are not responsible for it EVER! No worries!
I have Peso and US$ in cash and will take my ATM card and CC just in case but pay cash most of the time and use the cards at the airport for duty free
We avoid using CC in mexico. Cash is king at TTR, from our experience. Most CC companies charge extra to use them internationally any how. We bring a bunch of singles and fives for tipping plus extra cash for fun stuff to do.
We took cash and it worked out great. I took a mix of 1 dollar bills and 5 for tips. Exchanged money at TTR for shopping that's it...No cards too many stories of CC fraud for me
It all depends on what you plan to do while there. Other than the Boobs Cruise, we never leave the resort. We always bring $600 between the two of us that covers food and drink at airports, tipping and paying Steve. Plan ahead and budget for your plan. I have no issues using a credit card out of the country - that's what they're for. Let your bank know you'll be traveling and use it if needed - you're entirely protected from bogus charges.
