Hi guys We went to order our dollars for our holiday and got told that we were best off getting pesos for Mexico. Now obviously we need $45 for our final Boobs Cruise payment, but for tipping, coco bongo, any shopping etc are we best to order pesos? Thank you!!
Basically either US dollars or Pesos. If your Coming from Canada I prefer pesos because it save one conversion. Every time you convert you lose 2 to 6 or even 10 %. Personally I bring about 2 to $300 in us funds ,, and in pesos,, 100x20 peso ,,and 100 x 50 peso for tipping. I also bring a low limit credit card to use while shopping. You will get the best exchange rate using a CC Also bring a high limit CC for medical emergencies, They will not treat you until they have a deposit ,even if you have insurance.( see other recent posts ). Don't forget to register you r CC for Mexico or they will/may not work. If your going to go bar hopping/excursions bring more money accordingly.
Hi, We are coming from England, but we have heard that if you pay for things in dollars you will get change back in pesos at a poor exchange rate. Do the staff accept pesos as tips or prefer dollars?
Hi last year we took dollars but u do get your change in pesos and its hard to work out if they have give u the right change. This year we are going to take both pay for trips and clubs in $ and use pesos for the shop,market,bus ect. As for the tips I think they will be happy with any thing . Also depending what flight your going on you have to pay a departure tax witch can only be paid in English pounds or pesos
I'd recommend a split of dollars and pesos. Majority of services/goods you get a better rate in Mexico if you pay in pesos, plus it's easier to work out straight from £ to $MXN over £ to $US to $MXN! The biggest exception is if you're planning any excursions. Like you mentioned, Boobs Cruise is dollars to pay off balance. Other excursions like club tours, day trips etc, prices are quoted in dollars so I think it's easier to pay for these sort of things straight up in dollars. Be careful - we found out the hard way, you have to order pesos in from some exchanges (Thomas Cook, not sure if other agencies are the same) and they only came in really high denominations (mainly $500 and $1000MXN bills) which was a real pain to get broken down in Cancun for things like tips. M&S bureau de change had pesos in stock, and they were able to issue us up to £500 in $50MXN bills which was a lot less hassle in the long run.
Peso,s are better they are water proof and smaller I order small denotations from my bank ,takes a day or two but worth the planning. I have seen some stores just give a 10 to 1 exchange for US,, robbery I say. Staff will take either and not complain.
You can pay the Boobs Cruise balance in Pesos no problem. We also accept Canadian Dollars. General rule for the best deal is: If it's priced in Dollars - pay in Dollars i.e. nightclub entrance, tours (except if buying from UK travel operators*) If it's priced in Pesos - pay in Pesos (everything else) For tips - either is acceptable. Although, Pesos are a lot more flexible when it comes to the staff actually using them and not having to exchange them first. * UK travel operators wont accept Dollars because there is a limitation on how many can be paid into a Mexican bank account. They discourage Brits form bringing Dollars for this reason, since if you bought Dollars they wouldn't be able to sell any tours/services to you. As a Brit, if you only bring one currency, bring Pesos.
Thanks everyone, really helpful. We're bringing some dollars for the Boobs Cruise payment as its easier. Then mostly pesos for the rest. Not long to wait now!
we're from the uk too, we use peso's, if you get them in 20 peso notes they're waterproof too which comes in handy!
