Does any one have any real information on this? its not really being covered here in the US, pretty much just saying look this is anothe rreason not to go to Cancun. Its not going to change our mind about going, we have always felt safe there, would just like to get some real info about what happened.
Report I read said that it was several miles from the hotel zone, tourist areas, and as in the post above it mentioned the victims were members of a local taxi union............Google Cancun Shootings and it will bring up some reports.
We just returned from Cancun, and wondered why there were fully armed groups from the Army/Navy walking the beaches everyday...this explains it. Sad, and hope it doesn't change any minds about vacationing in Cancun. We always felt safe.
Ridiculous reporting as usual. USA Today screamed "Spring Break Mayhem: At least 6 killed at Cancun Bar" while the UK's Telegraph carried a photo of the Coco Bongo / Hard Rock Cafe area with a small subtitle saying it happened several miles away from the picture. LOL. It took place at a dive of a restaurant/bar in Region 233 which is so far out I had to look at a map to find it. It's probably more than 10 miles from the hotels and I bet not a single tourist has ever visited there. As usual it's a dispute between gangs, and taxi drivers that worked for the gangs were apparently the target. Here's a local news report: http://www.poresto.net/ver_nota.php?zona=qroo&idSeccion=1&idTitulo=229981 use a translator if you dont speak Spanish. I will change the title of the thread away from "Shooting yesterday at resort?" as this is how things get taken way out of context.
The large presence of Army/Navy Armed Guards is another way to help the local police control large volumes of crowds, example Spring Break. While staying with Steve over the past 10 days I did learn quit a bit about Mexico outside the hotel zone and inside too. There are different types of police there, one is for the tourist area, another is the local police for Mexico and the 3rd is the Military. They have regualr police cars and also the type where you see them cruising around in a pick up truck. The thing that struck me as odd is while they are driving around, the lights on the roof are on and flashing, but no sirens. Steve explained to me that was the norm, and if they are going to pull you over they get on the loud speaker and say pull over in Spanish. During peak seasons when the crowds get larger then what the tourist police can handle in a safe and orderly fashion and quick response time, Mexico will bring in the Military also to help patrol the areas, I have seen this practice in Canada & The USA, so it is normal. These are the guys in military uniforms with the large weapons over their shoulders. They are a bit intimidating looking at first, but I did manage to get a picture with 2 of them standing outside of the Congo's Bar, standing between the two of them and they were smiling for the picture too. Think it was more the size of the gun that was scary lol. If I have missed anything I am sure Steve can fill in the blanks, and I also looked at the area and yes it is very far away from the Hotel Zone or where any Tourist would normally be even if outside the and checking out the area, dont think even I went that far away along my journey's.
It's kind of funny, I live in Cancun and me or none of the Mexicans in the office had even heard about it, or no where that area is - I only find out about it from worried gringos and the ridiculous stories by the international press BTW - has anybody heard anything about this - Crime in Chicago 2013: Shooting in Chicago 3- 10- 13 I'm definitely not going to Chicago, there are armed police and shootings in public parks!!!!
