Just as a simple warning to everyone while swimming, I own a pool business and we build and renovate several swimming pools & hot tubs a season. The most dangerous part inside of a swimming pool is the "Main Drain" which is usually located in the deep end, however on most sports pool, which are under 4' in depth, like The Sexy Pool, there really isn't a deep end, so the Main Drains are easy to stand on. When a swimming pools Main Drain is blocked, the pump that filters the water is sucking at a very high rate of speed, and it is physically impossible to get off of once you are stuck. The only way is if the system is shut down or has a emergency backup devices installed that senses the blockage and either lets air back into the system or shuts the pump off. I constantly see people playing with them, trying intentionally to cover the grate with their feet as it feels funny, but this is extremely dangerous. Most commercial swimming pools and all new residential swimming pools will have 2 or more drains in the pool, this not only helps with better water circulation, but also helps to ensure people don't get stuck on them. However when someone is blocking one with their feet, and over in the other end of the pool, someone is doing the same thing, someone is going to get hurt really badly. Just google "Main Drain Bruise" and click on Images... it looks like a giant hickey but they hurt like hell. Your hair can get caught in these, and so can your swim wear, so do yourself the favor and don't screw around with these in a pool or a hot tub. Please don't get me wrong, I am not saying this lady died as a cause of the main drain, I am just using this unfortunate death to let everyone know to be careful when swimming in any pool or hot tub. Every State & Province & Country has different safety codes, so just be careful around these things, especially with children [ame=""]Good Morning America: Pool Entrapment - YouTube &list=PLFAA00A0CF4905A3B
Did your laws change up there as well for the type of drain covers? One of the big reasoning for the highlighting on this subject was from 2007 when a 5yr old girl here in Mn(Abigail Taylor) fell and then got stuck to the main drain at a public pool. She got stuck and as she got herself off of it her intestines and later passed on due to complications. Her parents lobbied for a change in laws and now EVERY main drain cover in the US had to be changed if they had that type of cover.
I find in a lot of areas of different cities they have different versions of the law, especially when it come to older pools in residential homes, we recommend installing them to all our clients and usually they had no idea how dangerous they can be. When we renovate a pool, or change the vinyl liner, we always concrete over them and make the change to the plumbing if necessary.
I feel really bad for this woman and her family. But I have to agree with Steve, things happen every day, everywhere. Last time we were at the Cancun airport an older woman had a seizure right in front of me and hit the cement very hard. I dont know what happened to her, but I doubt she will forget this. Maybe a reminder to all of us to make sure we take care of ourselves a little better, it cant hurt.
The incident that Trish mentioned from January, where the guy was pulled out of the pool blue, also happened on a day with awful weather. It was raining really hard, but there were still quite a few die-hards in the heated sexy pool, but nowhere near as full as it normally is. I'm sure it would have been noticed sooner if there were more people.
When my wife broke her arm, a couple of TTR employees got a two page accident report from us. I'm really concerned that they found this poor lady floating in the Sexy Pool and didn't ask the person who first found her for any information. I think that would be the minimum they should do. How r you going to know if you don't ask. US or Mexico, someone dies under ??? circumstances, someone should be asking questions.
Can we put the "bad" Trip advisor controversies to rest now. While a terrible thing that happened, it is true.
I'm so weary of pool drains after reading a story by a horror writer called Chuck Palahniuk... enough to make anyone steer clear! Angela, you did the best you could. As soon as you noticed her you responded and got her out the pool and then left it to the professionals to try and save her. It is one of those things that you'll play over and over trying to find some little detail you could've changed but you really did do your best!
It did happen. Her name was Christine and the negligence by the Hotel and EMT is beyond anything you could imagine. She died Sat 01/19 at the sexy pool sometime between 6-7 pm, The girl she was traveling with then went thru such a nightmare of mistreatment you would be shocked. The resort has yet to reach out to us, her family to even offer a condolence or any acknowledgement that this ever happened. The police never took a statement from my sister's friend and when she went to checkout on her scheduled date they had no record of her or my sister having ever been there.
