Every time we have been to Cancun previously we have used dollars, this time my travel agent tells me dollars are no longer accepted and we should use pesos! Is this information correct?
Dollars are accepted, you just get change back in pesos everywhere you go, so watch your currency exchange rate where you go... We used dollars to tip, at the hotel for some things, and at the little local drug stores, walmart, etc. This was just back in June. I did break for pesos quite often to not get screwed on the Exchange, the hotel's rate is pretty decent.
JC answered this in full. I was very surprised that the hotel rate wasn't bad. I expected them to have a rate of 10pesos to 1 dollar, but it was only ~1 peso short of the actual rate. I'm more than happy to loose out one 1 peso compared to ~3 pesos of getting change back.
American Dollars & Pesos are universally accepted. For the best exchange rate when shopping or dining out - use your credit card. It will give you the spot rate for that day which has been trending from 13.5 - 14 pesos to 1 US Dollar. Most Shops give you 12 to 1 Exchange.
go to your local bank in the states and get pesos before you go. The exchange rate is awesome right now.
If your traveling from the UK best to use peso get more for your money, otherwise you losing out twice
In some ways found it a pain last time not having much in the way of dollars - some things prices are quoted in dollars, such as excursions, and because pesos have to be ordered, we found that the travel agent only had high value bills, which we found difficult getting changed down for tips and stuff. Going to see if we can get a load of $1's for next trip.
Mexicans LOVE dollars and in tourist areas, prefer them, but as others mentioned, be very careful of their exchange rate. If you need to go to a supermarket, Mega gives an excellent exchange rate if you pay in US dollars and get your change in pesos, usually much better than any bank. Bizarrely, different bank branches give different rates of exchange! Be sure to get rid of your pesos before you leave. Overseas banks give poor rates for pesos.
We usually exchange for pesos. If there is any left over at the end then there is already spending money for the next trip to TTR!!
