Looks like the Mexican Tourism Board has gotten involved with this issue and it looks like this new rule should be rescinded sometime in September.

Thanks to Allyson Williams who it seems has done a lot of work getting to the right people to get this rule reversed!

    Her Site: http://tinyurl.com/7fv8jmo

Her Site has great contact info to lodge one's unhappiness with this New Rule and also updated info on which airlines are honoring the rule too.

From Allyson Williams' Site: New “No Pets In Cabin” Policy Could Change the Way We Travel to Mexico

    Latest Update:

June 25, 2012 Update (11:30am) – I received an update from Lic. José Armando Garcia Nuño this morning. The new Circular, CO AV-07.8/07 R2, is dated June 21, 2012 and has been posted on the SCT website. In his email, Sr. Garcia stated that “the Aeronautical Authority has published document (Circular compulsory) that allows airlines to transport pets in the passenger cabins. Airlines must meet the mandatory circular immediately as soon as they are notified. The airlines must allow pets climb into the passenger cabins, immediately.” He also wanted to remind me that “this new document is NOT a new regulation, simply is a document that clarifies the doubts with regard to the Law on Civil Aviation.” He clarified this statement in another email by saying “The document that now lets upload pets to the airlines is a temporary measure. He is currently working on reforming article 107 of the law of Civil Aviation.”

I have been informed by a group in Cozumel who is working closely with the airlines that “this circular was sent to all airlines on Friday.” Obviously, the airlines will need a little time to re-implement this policy, update their websites, etc. I will post as I learn more.

Well, this should be a lot of fun. Maybe Cory will travel soon with his monkey.

Must admit I find the furore about this really strange. I must have been on 100+ flights and never once seen a dog or cat in the cabin - I guess it's an American thing.

I can understand (a little) expats wanting to take their pets home with them, but people complaining (see TripAdvisor) about not being able to bring dogs with them on a weeks vacation?? WTF!

Steve: The various rescue groups use the "in-cabin" way for smaller dogs/cats as there was no(or very little) extra charge. Makes a HUGE difference when you fly anything from 5 to -40 dogs/cats a month...

The only time Ive brought a pet on vacation was for my 5 month road trip in the US some 10 years ago. Thats only because he was a recent rescue, with major issues.

Quite a few people fly their pets to and back US for their, either short stay or longer stays here in Cancun and other places in Mexico.

Im glad this crap has been overturned(as it seems) :)

Ps. For many, pets are like kids. Id never switch my dogs for kids, ever. ;)

The folks who were posting about this on TA were ones that go to the Cancun area for more than a week's vacation and not the one weekers. The ones concerned are folks who go for extended periods of time. For many, TA is the only way they know of to get the 'word' out.

As New “No Pets In Cabin” Policy Could Change the Way We Travel to Mexico and other Sites show, there are many from the USA and Canada who bring their pets along to various Mexican tourist areas for extended periods of time.

This is another thing that puzzles me, why do folks want to adopt a Mexican pet? Surely dogs have puppies in the US and Canada too?

The cost would be better spent on a neutering/spaying program of strays or subsidies for the pets of low income families imho.

Steve: Why do people adopt children from poor, war ridden etc. countries? Im sure there are plentiful of orphans in the US, Canada, Sweden, England, Australia etc. ;)

Dogs in the US/Canada at least have a sporting chance if mistreated. In Mexico(amongst other places), there aren't even laws against torturing, killing and/or sexually abusing animals... Heck, some of the countries most popular "sports" include bull, dog and cock torture("fighting").

I wont even begin to describe what are done to puppies, strays etc. in Cancun...

Regarding the spay/neutering: WE do that - the Govt dont do jack sh*t about it and the budget set aside is magically gone before its even revealed... The dog pound that is supposed to be founded by the municipality, has had their trucks standing still(broken down) since I arrived in 2007. Most likely even long before that. We do free clinics, with vets from all of North and South America, whom pay their own trip and stay to do it, for free.

Dogs/cats that are picked up by the pound have a 36 hour chance - then, by Mexican Federal law, they must be "terminated". Its not done like back home(injections) - lets just leave it at that...

So, to sum it up, I guess: Dogs/cats in Mexico are unprotected before they are even born. They have zero value, no legal backing etc.

Actually, when we used to fly back to the US on vacation, we took our dog with us (in cabin) so it goes both ways. Dunno what we'd do with him here if we didn't. then again, I don't think we've ever gone for less than 3 weeks, but still. Yeah, dog goes with. If we didn't have kids, I'd be tempted to figure out a way to keep him here though...
