Not trying to hijack the thread, but I'm going to toss in a recommendation and a Corona comment. I don't think Mexico is a fantastic place to find good, meaning Really Damn Good microbrew beer. It's just not their thing in the way that, say, Tequila (or To-Kill-Ya, LOL!) can be. I've heard that Corona is equivalent to Pabst Blue Ribbon comparison before, but it's more like Milwaukee's Best Light, to me anyway. Pabst seems heavier. *shrug* None of the three of them are great. I just wanted to hold out one that's less expensive down there, and pretty darn good. Sol. Give that shot sometime, it's palatable. Best Mexican beer I've had yet is the Dos EQuis Amber. Beats the Modelo, Pacifico and Superior easily, in my opinion.
atleast you didn't compare it to old milwaukee...... thats pure gut rot in a can..... Sol is good..... RUI Santa Fa in Cabo had Dos Equis Amber and it wasn't bad..... much better then the Dos Equis Lager.... I agree..... Bohimia is pretty good too..... I can also stand Tacate but I think thats from El Salvador..... Living in San Diego we get alot of beers imported from south of the border in our stores...... I would like to see a good Mexican beer that could hold its own against Samual Adams......
Doing my research, I found that there are actually a couple good Micro Breweries in Mexico City popping up that have some nice porters and IPAs. Check out this blog: Mexican Microbreweries. That said, I doubt I will be able to find any of these in Cancun...but I'll be looking. I agree with your assessment of Sol. What screws up most beers in Mexico is they often let them get warm/hot and then re-refrigerate (is that a word???) them and then they get very skunky. Nothing turns my stomach quicker.
Well Mike, it looks like you have found the beer connoisoirs. You also asked earlier if the hotel would have a problem with you bringing in your own case of beer. I am fairly certain that they would have no problem with it. Lot's of people bring in their own alcohol including myself on our last trip. Can't see why beer would be any different.
I would think that they get a better deal on the Dos Equis than the Corona. It is all about the bottom line. Funny thing is that we went out on the Temptations boat for the afternoon with a few other couples and they served Sol beers on the boat. Go figure,
see..... that makes the most sense and explians alot...... corona and sol don't come in kegs....... btw..... wtf corona and sol..... your really missing the boat on that market..... I believe the market to be suppling alcohol to resorts has to be big business in Mexico..... seeing as tourism and tourirm related industries makes up like 40% of Mexicos GDP...... it seems kinda stupid for corona and sol not to try and break into that market.....
Not sure why it is but almost every hotel has Dos Equis as the house beer, personally I cant stand it and drink Vodka instead. At the hotel is the only time I ever drink Vodka rather than beer, with not unsurprising results For you beer connoisseurs there are two main breweries in Mexico: Cuauhtémoc-Moctezuma Brewery These guys make Dos Equis as well as Sol, plus Tecate, Bohemia, Superior and a few others. Cerveceria Modelo These guys make Corona, Victoria, Modelo and Pacifico. Pacifico or Modelo Especial are what I would choose to drink in a local bar if available or at home. Hotels have the choice to go with one brewery or the other but not both, almost always it's with the first company - presumably they offer a better deal. My guess would be Dos Equis is cheaper than Sol so that's why it's usually the primary beer at hotels. On our booze cruises we always serve Corona, and it does come in a keg although sometimes we use cajuama's which are 24oz bottles. Seems strange since that is the opposite brewery to the one that provides Dos Equis to the hotel.
Modelo Especial is not bad! From what I can tell its not just the hotels that have to go with one distributor...its most of the main restaurants too. Hope they get past that and open things up to local microbrews once they get off the ground a bit more. -Chris
Im a big wino myself. the wine is awful (and there are not too many i say that about). i plan on putting some of the nicer box wine in my luggage (who needs clothes and shoes when you have liquid courage?*!?). you can also buy some accross the road at the Oxxo. Learned to drink vodka during pool time.
