gabesz: Since I do not know every Chinese person in the world, Ill stay away from putting them all in the same bowl. Living in Thailand(and traveling that part of Asia), I can say that the way of eating, as you describe, is not very uncommon at all. Most place I ate at with other people, had either a manual "tray" that could be rotated to reach whatever one desired. Fancier places had automatic stuff, rolling the food around. Eating with local friends and their families, meant "sharing", like Ive never seen before. I loved it, as its a HUGE contrast of the sour-mouths back home, whom suffer to even smile during mealtime, haha. Now, when it comes to the rooms and people sleeping on the floors to squeeze in as many as possible: I cant name ONE single country where I havent seen that during my traveling years. When working with tourism here, I get asked "how many would they allow to share the room with?" on a daily basis. A bunch of friends(from Chicago) shared a 3 bed place... There were 9 of them - 3 in each bed. One suggestion would be to travel around Asia to get a different view of it all. Not only is it awesome, but it can really make people open their eyes and actually see for themselves, rather than listening to what others think/say. I had certain views before visiting ALL the countries Ive been in, and I must say that most of those views were radically changed within a week or two.
Having been in Asia many times I know what Rawkus is saying. I am not condoning any of the ways the Chinese act in a restaurant or a hotel. All I am saying the more Chinese you have visiting the less business hotels and restaurants will have. Sharing one meal for 4-6-8-10-12 people when ordering for two is not good for a restaurant. Having people share a room made for 4 and putting 6-8 people in it for the sake of saving money and not paying for the extra people is not good for the hotel. So the businesses lose out and the Chinese are ahead of the game. As V states: "it is hard to "Buy US" when you can get China for a fraction of the price, without a terrible dropoff in quality. To my way of thinking, we can thank the labor unions for high labor costs that pass on to the consumers. We are going to have a real mess with all of our debt to China is the US electorate don't do something gov't spending, and soon. It is up to the voters to force change." The US started this process and Mexico could be next. The Chinese will underprice Mexican goods and will try to take over the economy of Mexico as well. Even in Jamaica they are building like there is no tomorrow. They just build a huge convention center just outside of Montego Bay. Built in less than a year with Chinese money and labor. Guess who will suffer from that? Sorry but they are slowly taking over the west in one way or another adding to the riches that own already in the US due to the stupidity of Americans for not buying American which was the way to go for many years till Nixon opened trade with China.
