I have been searching on the forums for this but cant find the thread... I hear cancun accepts both dollars and pesos and i hear many people telling me different things about what to take? I am English so is it best to take dollars or pesos? just if i change into dollars over here will i will pay a commission and then i hear when you buy things in dollars you get pesos for change so i would suffer a second commission but people say mexicans prefer dollars? any one shed a light? also any one just got back from there? whats it like? busy? 7days till i come...cant wait!!!
Alright matey, when is it you go, Monday for me! To answer your question,all i can say is what's worked for me; Yes mexico will accept either pesos or dollar, it don't matter what you take so purely up to you. i found if you pay in dollar then yes you get peso change, however this is off-putting as you don't want to be short changed. However your talking minimal money unless your buying an excursion where at that time you'll be partly sober to keep an eye on things. I'm taking £300 in peso CASH. with another £700 on a Thomas cook dollar travel card. costs 50p to use at a cash point, so go to the cash point what twice a week and get out lump sums. If the card gets lost/stolen you ring a number and they block it AND send another card TO YOUR HOTEL in 2 days. but wait for it... heres the best bit, The ATM i used last year gave me the option to get dolla OR pesos so which ever one you prefer you can get throughout. I found zero need to bring Peso's. It's 12 for a dollar, many places bring it down to 11 or 10 but that's just a matter of cents really. I brought down $100 in ones and a little under 500 for 5 nights. The only time I ran into an issue with getting ripped off is I was dumb after leaving Frogs and forgot to leave myself a $1 bill, so I gave the bus driver a 20 and got ripped as far as pesos went...ended up being like an 8 dollar bus ride, still better than a taxi. Everywhere takes us dollar
GH is right. I wouldnt pay with US dollars unless i had exact change. They screw you big time when you pay with U.S. money and they convert it to peso's. Better off bringing peso's and a shitload of 1's.
Alright mate, Its Tuesday morning for me! cant wait now like excitement is really kicking in...am working on the monday before i go too, well i will be attempting too cant see any getting done... thanks for the help, a think am going to take pesos and i might look into that card...i would rather just have the one currency to be honest so i might stick all with pesos, just i have never been to mexico or america and learning one currency against the pound is hard enough.... haha dont talk about the match...we deserved to lose but still its a right kick in the nuts when its that late in the game and the mackems had won too!
It really doesn't matter mate to be honest. Just think of it has $1 is 10 pesos or there about's. Think the current exchange rate for peso's is 17.6 to £1. So roughly £1 - 20 Peso's. Il be taking Pesos this time around, in passed visits i've taken dollars. Would be great to meet up Alicia. Inbox me your number on FB or on here and i will get in contact when over there.
