Anyone have any recs? Our pool area is fairly large. Debating between a conv TV mounted on the house or a projection unit. Our TV guy says a 46" will look like a postage stamp on our house, but the projection unit will be worthless unless it is dark. Any suggestions?
I think they make a 72" one that might work for you. My guess is that it costs roughly the national debt of Peru, but it may be worth a shot.
You are right about the cost of the larger outdoor TVs. As of now I am leaning towards a projection unit with a 120+ inch screen, however I need to talk to an owner before buying.
I have an Epson 8350 projecting on a 155" screen in my barn. Does reasonably well in conventional lighting but if you open the doors it gets pretty pale. If you do a little internet forum research you might find a projector suited to your specific needs. Also if you paint your own screen, go with a darker gray color and it will perform much better in the light as well. Good luck!
A friend made his own screen using sheet rock. It seems to me he used some specialized paint that contained silver flecks?
Both of mine are sheetrock. They have some crazy priced factory paint kits out there. I found a recipe on line that used basic flat latex with some waterbased poly for the sheen and some metallic silver for the reflectivity. Then just kept adding gray at trial and error a little at a time till it got to where it handled the light prettty well. Not sure how well sheetrock would perform outdoors though.............
If I go with a projector I will use an electric screen so I can keep it out of the wind when not in use.
hope it works out for you my friend t and i had the same challenge. because of the weather here in texas we did not want anything that we could not just reel in at a moments notice. for the superbowl party this year we simply ran a cable and purchased a 46" it tuirned out fairly well as you can tell from the pic the problem is the logistics - wet people running all around it and other challenges the 46" would have been way to small were it not put close to the pool - but close to the pool creates other challenges - since we were just wanting to watch the super bowl it worked out okay good luck my friend rob
Good hearing from you, and I have considered a TV that I could cover up or bring in. I have a sub that seems to get wet a couple of times a year due to being over-served at our own bar and leaving it outside. Not sure how the TV would hold up.
If I find a pic of my old setup, I'll post it. It worked reasonably well... I build a stone faced bar on wheels that I could roll around the backyard. Because it had a couple draft taps connected to a deep freezer on a timer, it had constant power. I rebuilt the front of the bar to add a TV and sound system. It did sit low to the ground, but still worked well around the patio - like watching a camp fire. The best feature was it was perfect height when in the pool... And with the bar overhang providing some shade and being on wheels to turn based on where the sun was aiming, it was great.
