Thinking about this again, if we drink the water (ice...washed veggies...brushing teeth, etc) in RP though we do bring down plenty of drinking water, we imagine that Cancun which sees much more tourist traffic should be better...in theory at least. Will still stick to bottled as much as possible, but just not gonna worry about it anymore...

Frank and Jamie pretty much covered it. The hotel does have a state of the art filtration system and the water is perfectly ok.

It will be different to water at home in terms of its trace minerals and the way it's been processed so it may taste and smell different but that doesn't mean it's unsafe. Personally, I would not want to drink a pint of it due to the taste but it's fine for brushing your teeth and when used for the washing of salads and veggies.

Ice is totally fine too, always check for the hole through the middle of the cube to indicate purified ice. The only ice I have ever seen in almost 8 years of living in Cancun that did not have a hole through it is the ice you get for free at the convenience stores which is for filling your cooler not for consumption, and I have been to some very dodgy bars!

Pool water splashing into drinks and soap from cups that haven't been rinsed thoroughly are far more likely to give you problems.

Where I live downtown the water is definitely not drinkable but I and my kids still use it for teeth brushing with no ill effects. You'll be fine at the hotel.

I have to agree with Steve....I think the major problem is when your in the pool water splashes into the drinks ....that is why I like using a Bubba Keg or the ones they sell in the gift shop.

Or just slam you drinks before leaving the bar...

Thats makes it hard when after meeting so many great people on here and your in the pool and everyone around you are bringing over shots for everyone. Its funny to see people trying to balance 10 shots in each hand walking toward a group of people to do shots with in the pool....lol. Almost like a juggler....lol. Last yr someone had both hands full with stacks of shots and somebody decided to cannonball in the pool......but they did not spill a shot but sure some water got into them......lol

Im wondering if something is missing here. Like most people I have made the local fruits one of the staples of my diet when on vacation and the mere fact of eating a lot of fruit will affect the digestive system itself. Couple that with the fact that most fruit is mainly water and unfiltered, you may have an answer.

Well keep in mind that outside of main growing seasons in places like Florida most of the fruit you eat comes from places like the Cancun area. Nature does do a pretty good job of filtering everything though.

I think like you said it has more to do with a break with your routine. More fruit, way more alcohol, different oils used in cooking, different spices than you are used to, hotter weather, so on and so forth. I haven't ever had an ill effect from water at the resort, but like most say I wouldn't suck it from the tap because of the taste which is hard to avoid!

EXCELLENT POINT! We were in the Mayan last week for a wedding and I overheard a mother tell her daughter at breakfast "I told you that we can't eat the fruit and vegetables when we are down here!" I found it so ironic because in Canada, like you say, when it is off season sooooo much of our fruit and vegetables are imported from Mexico! Too funny! I said the exact thing to my hubby.....some people are so paranoid!!!:flagcanada:

These are all great points. My only remaining question would be if the fruits and vegetables are properly washed before serving. Almost every trip I come down with some kind of stomach infliction which fortunately does not much affect the daily plans. After a half day or so of help from Imodium Im back on track.

Personally I have never had any issues that way. I think the resort has a pretty high quality filtration system so I wouldn't get too worried. The mornings I actually make it to breakfast I know that I always find lots of watermelon and pineapple on my plate. If water was making me sick it would still be masked by the raging hangover at that point lol!
