So I think I read somewhere on here that there is a store across the street. Is it a little convenience store with a limited selection of overpriced sundries?

There is a place right across the street (over the street for you Brits) that sells some liquor and beer, soft drinks, red bull, gas station stuff (gum, candy, etc.), souveniers, mugs, hats, flip flops, etc., and has a small pharmacy. It's pricy but very convenient, and definitely cheaper than the hotel gift shop.

My understanding is Wal-Mart is 5-10 minutes by cab or 10-15 by bus. It's close, but the small store is literally across the street.

Store across the street is still expensive (they're still hotel zone pricing), but is way cheaper for some stuff than the gift shop. I needed a new pair of sunglasses after breaking mine - wanted $400 pesos in hotel gift shop, whereas similar style at the shop across the road was $190 pesos.

Whatever you do don't buy crisps or maize snacks from the shop! They were ridiculously expensive, around $100 pesos for a relatively small bag. Also a friend needed bite cream and they wanted $400 pesos for a small tube. Except for the small necessary things that wouldn't be worth taking the bus, you are better off with a supermarket downtown.

We tried the Walmart trip the last time we went and we thought it was a waste. We booked our transfer through USATransfers and they charge an additional $30 to stop at Walmart before they take you directly to TTR. We should have just skipped the Walmart trip and saved that money.

Ended up going across the street to the OXXO (or whatever it is) and got everything we needed.

I'm really into the Whipped Cream Vodka these days (straight/over ice). Need to see if that little store carries it. I may just pack a bottle...... just in case.
