About tipping, is there anybody you are NOT allowed to tip? Specifically, the front desk workers? I have heard about them getting in trouble or even fired if they accept tips, but I'm not sure if it is true.

i'll accept a tip if you throw it my way....but no really the front desk have been known to accept tips. I know this for a fact. But you need to be discret about it as this can be taken as a bribe for a better room. Don't want anyone to get in trouble !!

They have always told us they prefer US dollars as well. And we always tip Patsy at the front desk.

Usually no, unless they have rooms available . They have nice public washrooms you can change in and go swim and eat.

Most times if you pay in dollars you will get your change in pesos, Buy a tee shirt with a $50.00 or a candy bar with a $20.00 and I have enough pesos for the week and don't have to mess with going to the exchange.

    For Canadians:
Just received my e-ticket yesterday. In the documentation there was a notice which stated the following:

"Pls note that the Mexican Gov't has put in place a new rule that applies to the exchange of US $ to Mexican Pesos. This new rule applies to money exchanged in banks & in currency exchange offices only & does not apply to withdrawals made from automated tellers (ATM's) or to purchases & transactions made with credit cards or debit cards.
It is possible that certain hotels or businesses may refuse the payments made with US $ in cash, therefore, we recommend that clients carry a credit card, debit card and or Mexican Pesos and/or Cdn $

I usually take mostly pesos anyway, save the US dollars for duty free and excursions mostly as I found most other places ie. shops and taxis gave a better rate when using pesos.

I agree with you. I've also been use to taking US $ for tips etc. This was something new so thought I'd post just in case someone wants to check out the site. :)
