I am not saying mikef is wrong but I have never heard of such a thing. I called a friend who is staying at the Fiesta Americana Grand Coral Beach and asked him to try the six zeros thing. After the 4th zero it beeped and said Code Error. He repeated is a couple of times with the same result. I asked him to try 0-0-0-0 and 1-2-3-4 (FAGCB uses for digit pass codes)and neither seem to be a "default code." I would be curious to know a specific hotel where six 0's open the lock. Just my two pesos worth. Some hotels use those big blocky locks and they hand you a lock and a key when you check in and you turn it in when you leave. They ask you for your lock if you forget it but who could really forget their valuables as they are checking out.
I just stayed at the Me by Melia, and the safe system seems a bit fishy. You insert your room card, and then the lights flash green and red. during this time you make up a new 4 digit code. lets say 7877. the light flashes green. now press 7877 again, and the safe lock moves. Good. but 30 mins later, I tried 7877, and no lights came on. my shit was stuck inside... now I had to call front desk. they send an employee with a safe programmer (like pic but more crude ) anyways, she plugs into my safe, starts scanning, and I then see her try 7877. no lights come up again.... then she resets it... opens it up, unscrews the back panel... replaces 4 AAA batteries and tries it again. tells me to insert my room card, and do 4 new numbers... it works... for another 30 mins... and my stuff is stuck. i didnt worry til the next day to get my things out, they then came again and did the same drill, I translated that they already replaced my batteries and something else is wrong. so they brought in another safe... (they are not even bolted down, just heavy and plugged into a wall socket in the back for the wall socket in the safe (so you can charge your phone or laptop in the safe) and they did this with two other Safes until one finally works right and my password works for hours and days after it. long story short, I saw her scan the first safe, and try my exact password without me saying the numbers to her. this was the exact safe... i remember the keycard slot and the handle. http://news.archiexpo.com/press/onity/os600-keycard-interface-safe-10464-152110.html
Guess this is where my job is to come to the defense of hotel employees. I am at atleast one if not more hotels everyday. And if you could see the security behind the scenes, the last ppl you will ever blame for stealing anything from your room is the staff. Employees, have to check in their phones, (if they are able to even bring them into the hotel), keys, MP3 players, and so on. When they leave, they are all patted down and a hand held metal detector is used. The only place I have not seen this process done is at Temptations. Maybe they do it at heavy shift changes, and I have never been around then. Your fellow guests are more then likely your biggest threat. So many stores are of those that enter through a sliding glass door on the first floor.
I dont think a resort would be so silly as to keep the default code, prob changed it by now. Wow, patted down but I can see this being standard practice, tourism depends on the internet and word of mouth...one bad exp can keep several ppl from visiting the same resort, town, Country... When ppl want to steal they will but good to know that measures are taken to curve such impulsive behaviors.
We have stayed at many different resorts - some with electronic safes, some with keys, a few with safety deposit boxes behind the registration desk. We are in Cancun now and a few days ago had an issue with our safe.....we forgot to lock it!! I guess between hubby and myself we though the other person had closed it. We were down at the pool/beach area all day and when we returned to the room there was a note in the door and one on the bed from the management. Guess this must happen occasionally because the papers were preprinted and stated that the staff had found the safe open and it had been locked by management. We went to the desk and had to sign and show our room key for the safe key. Everything was still in the safe - passports, credit cards, wallets, Iphone, nook, camera and cash. Thank you to the honest employees of Club Regina!! This event could have had a bad outcome but didn't. Lesson learned - ALWAYS remember to lock the safe and take the key!!
I am obsessed with reading reviews on Trip Advisor and such...and also some legal cases that have happened here, and the staff, especially the cleaning staff get most of the blame; and t just isn't happening le that....most of the time. Something that sticks out most to me was a case about 2 yrs ago, when a 16 was on vacation with her Grandmom from Detroit. Girl ended up going missing and the first person blamed was a poor hotel worker...not the man she befriended and met up with in Cancun. People had the nerve to say that they saw her go out the back (employee only area) and also walk out the front doors with the employee...either scenario cannot...and will not happen.
EXACTLY!!!! at golden parnassus, when i "give" something to the employee as a gift.... i have to write down the info of the gift im giving them, my name and room number, and signature in the piece of paper!
