As long as you stay in the hotel zone it's safer than most cities. We have been all over Mexico and it's the only place that the girls feel comfortable going out without me.
Even when you're not in the hotel zone, it still can be safe and enjoyable. My wife and I were the only two Americans for miles when we went to the cockfights deep in the Cancun jungle.
