New theme - Kidnap the wife night Sounds like a new theme... 5:daveandmo: shots or your wife gets it!
Crime is every where including Cancun, not within resorts, not generally anyway. Most crime occurs within the town, narco related or not...but within the town... The same crap that you read about happening in Juarez, Acapulco, Michoacan is happening in Cancun, to what extend I dont know, the Mex govt does a great job at keeping such things in tourist or affluent cities off the news channel. As stated, are 15 ppl per week being murdered in Cancun prob or prob not but ppl are losing their heads, bodies being dumped in open areas to be found, some narco related. The resorts are safe, unless a high value target happens to be staying at the same resort. If you see any hispanic looking type of guy, having drinks, sorrounded by 10 bodyguards and 15 young girls in bikinis dont stare just check out and runnnn, otherwise the resorts are safe. And I am not talking out of my ass, the mex govt is working hard at keeping the violence within its affluent and tourist areas off the newssssssss....but again, the resorts and excursions are safe....
Yes there is narco related crime in Cancun (what city of one million inhabitants doesnt have narco crime?) but to suggest it's on a par with Juarez and such places is very far from the mark. I'm a father of two young kids, I can work from any country with an Internet connection. If it really was dangerous I'd be on the next flight out. As for news coverage, well I dont know how familiar you are with Cancun local news or newspapers but pretty much anything of significance is reported, and there hasnt been that much this year really. More often than not, any incident anywhere within 50 miles of Cancun is promptly blown up out of all proportion by the US media.... gotta keep those tourist dollars in the US and take every chance we can get to slur those dirty Mexicans who are taking all our jobs. I've lived in Cancun for 7 years, in all that time not one tourist has been murdered or even injured in Cancun as a result of Narco crime. Tourists are safe, much safer than they are in places like Dominican Republic, Jamaica and many parts of the US. At least we agree that resorts and excursions are safe, I would add to that living in Cancun is safe providing you dont mix with shady business such as drugs, people smuggling, gun running and corruption.
I dont want to go head on with anyone on this topic... I dont know if the numbers are similar to Juarez, I know that Cancun along with other coastal cities are ports of entry and after entry there is logistics and the logistics is what evolves into street crimes. I am scheduled to be in Cancun in two weeks and I fully intend to venture into town. I am from Colombia, Mexico is no different. Crime is high period...you have to be involved in bad things for bad things to happen to you or sorround yourself with sketchy friends and associates. Crime on the news is not the same as actual stats....criminal enterprises including Colombia and Mexico employ two tactics, the "sending a message" which is usually reported in the news and there is the everyday business tactic....The everyday tactic involves settling debts, taking over turf, stealing, etc by disappearing folks via clandestine cremation ovens, clandestine graves, mass graves, out in the ocean, etc so that govt stats are kept within average levels...those crimes the governments keep out of the news, they cant prevent a camera crew from taking pics of a body dumped on main ave but they do have control over findings that the camera did not yet see. Again, I am wise enough to know that cartels are no interested in heat brought on by messing with tourists, they are only interested in their own network and anyone that opposes their goals....I will be venturing into town I just wont be walking into the slums section of town, like any other Country in the world, one should never enter the slums unless you know how to navigate them and I dont so I wont. It is what it is...not discouring anyone, there are millions of decent ppl in Mexico and those are the working class and that is who I will be spending my week with, simply want to clarify that what we see in the news is not the real scope nor the complete story.
I would imagine that they have other things to worry about, like which Bugatti to choose next etc... than worry about tourists.
The only problem we have encountered with the drug cartel is that they seem to charge a bit too much for cocaine nowadays. :aktion061:
