I always kick myself when I visit a country and not soak up the culture or do any touristy stuff like tours or swimming with the dolphins but I don’t want to spend an arm and a leg either
What types of activities are available on or off the resort (Temptations) and is it cheaper to book via the hotel or online when I get there

There is a link on the TTR page that has activities listed. We like the ruins but Chichen Itza is a full day tour. Talum is a nice tour but the ruins are not a s grand.
The prices on the TTR site are close to what you would get on your own, but Grayline tours and USA tours also have offerings

Take the catamaran across to the island. U go with a big group no kids and drink lots, girls can take their tops off on the way over there, snorkle, have a great lunch on the beach and go shopping in the town there. It's a day trip well worth it. We paid $50 per person. Husband and i have done this twice.

There's pretty much anything you could want to do, so it depends on your budget and interests. The Boobs Cruise to Isla Mujeres is a great way to spend the day. It's a great value for $65.

Xel Ha park or the beach at Akumal are good places to snorkel (45 minutes to an hour from TTR).

You can do ziplines at Selvatica or Xplor Park. If you're into nature, there's Crococun Zoo about 10 minutes out of Cancun, or Xcaret park about 45 minutes away. You can swim with dolphins at Xcaret (and in other places closer to Cancun) or whale sharks.

I haven't been to Chichen Itza, but the ruins at Tulum were fascinating, and the beach there is gorgeous.

Sorry I can't help with prices...we spent most of our time at the resort this time!

    xcaret

My wife and i visited xcaret with a mexican couple we met whilst at Temptation,if you go expect to make it a whole day trip, and my advice would be to take some sort of picnic arrangement with you, there are some man made beaches/bays/ with replica ruins, a lovely spot to stay for a while and have some pre packed lunch/sandwiches etc, there are a lot of animals in different areas, and a horse show at lunchtime in an arena around the middle of the park, also a water course which you can snorkel along, takes around an hour for that itself, also a large butterfly sanctuary, reptile house, and in the early evening there is a great show put on in one of two areas, either at a mayan ball court type of area, or as it was the day we were there in an underground ampitheatre, i must say that the atmosphere there was amazing,90% of the folks are mexican in the audience and they really get into the show with around 8 to 10 different acts ie dancers, singers, more horses an absoloutely wonderfull evening !! think the cost was around 100 dollars but for the evening show alone it was well worth it a great day out!! hope this is off some help to you. (we were there from around 11am until around 830pm)
