I am going to Cancun in October, I have never been there but I was wondering if you can go into the beaches, since I read a couple of reviews about how some of the beaches are very rocky and you almost cant go into them. I just want to make sure that whatever resort (before I book one) we stay at, we (my husband my 2 year old and me) can go into the beach without worrying about hurting our feet with rocks.

    Please help me!!!! Thank you!

I would recommend a day trip to Isla Mujeres and that you visit Playa Norte.
You can catch the ferry easily enough by yourselves and then spend the day on the beach. There are no rocks, no waves just calm blue sea for your little one to play in.
Unfortunately in Cancun it's touch and go with the beach conditions and currents. A lot of the time it's too rough to go in further than to your ankles and the areas where you can, there's seaweed.

Since the beach restoration i have yet to see anymore rocks on the beaches. A yr and a half ago all the beaches on the caribe side got new sand. No matter what hotel you book, you will be fine. Like Jen states, the ocean is where the danger lays

Find your hotel on a map of the Hotel Zone, which is shaped like a big #7. If you are at the top of the 7, the beach is calm as the currents are more or less blocked by Isla Mujeres. If you are on the up and down part of the 7 you can get some strong waves into which I would not turn a 2 year old loose (alone).

The beach at Puerto Morelos is typically nice and calm and without rocks. They do have a lot of vegitation that is cleaned daily by the city. There is also vegitation on the "top of the 7" area but the hotels keep it very clean.

If you want to post the name of your hotel, you will get replies as to its location on the 7. Generally, the top would be around km 8 or lower. Km 9 and up is on the up and down part of the 7.

    Have fun.

You might want to talk to a knowledgeable travel agent also. We always work with ours and it doesn't really cost any more contrary to popular belief. My agent has files on all the resorts in the area. He actually inspects the resorts personally.

If you're not committed to Cancun itself, about 45 minutes south in Playa del Carmen the whole stretch of beach is just incredible.

Look at hotels on the top of the seven, Beachscape Kin Ha Villas is great for families, apartment style units, best beach in town, kitchenette, nice pool, kids area. Totally tranquil. Others would be the Intercontinental, Riu Caribe, Ocean Spa to name a few.

The Canuck is right, Beachscape Kin Ha Villas has absolutely calm water in front of it, and the bottom drops so gradually you're 50 yards out and the water is just waist deep. A small child could play safely, under supervision, at the water's edge, there.

There are no rocks, and the sand is the deepest and most powdery white of any in this area.

We love the place, and often do minivacations there, in spite of the fact we live in Cancun! Ask for a room at the front, near the beach. If you're in a group, consider a two-bedroom suite as a real value, with an enormous balcony looking out to sea.
